Hogges playing important role in football's future - Scope
Bermuda Hogges owner Paul Scope remains “bullish” about the team's future and believes this season will serve as valuable preparation for summer competitions involving the Island's national teams.Later this month the Under-20s head to Puerto Rico for World Cup qualifiers, while the senior side travel to Cayman Islands in August for the Digicel Caribbean Cup.Although Hogges are second bottom of the Premier Development League, Scope feels it's important to remember that the cold hard lucre of points is not the only currency to measure success. And he pointed out the Hogges were formed with the primarily objective to raise the standard of Bermuda's national team players, and believes Hogges can take credit for improved performances at the international level.“As much as we all want better results, the thing we need to keep remembering is that we're trying to prepare the Bermuda Under-20s and the senior team for international football,” said Scope.“We can't always get the strongest team to travel as some of the guys have summer jobs, so we took the opportunity to take a lot of Under-20s away with us and they gained some valuable experience.“From the very beginning our main aim has been to develop the national team and I think people need to respect that, and from that perspective I think we have progressed.”Having convincingly defeated Long Island Rough Riders and Baltimore Bohemians in their last two games at BAA Field, Hogges will look to finish the season in a flourish against Westchester Flames this weekend. And while results haven't been as good as Scope would have liked, especially when Hogges have travelled overseas, he believes at home they have proven they can compete with any Premier Development League side.“Okay, the results haven't been great but when we come home and added some of the older boys we've been a different team,” Scope said.“I'm not overly disappointed about this season as I've seen some good things both on and off the field.“I'm still bullish about the Hogges' future and of course we would all like to win more games and make the play-offs.“There are probably three or four teams in this league who are so much better than the rest but I think we're arguably the best team in the bottom half of the table when we get a full strength team out.”Hogges take on Westchester at 5pm on Sunday at BAA Field.
