Darrell: Lightbourne’s had a big influence on U20s
Bermuda Under-20 coach Gary Darrell has hailed the impact of Kyle Lightbourne who has been helping prepare the side for next week’s World Cup qualifiers in Puerto Rico.Lightbourne has been a regular at Under-20 training sessions in recent weeks and Darrell believes the new Robin Hood coach’s ‘tough love’ approach has improved the players’ attitude.Darrell was boss of the senior national team in the early 1990s when Lightbourne forged a deadly strike partnership with Shaun Goater, who was also playing professionally in England at the time.He said the former Stoke and Coventry man had brought another dimension to the Under-20 coaching sessions and been a positive presence in the camp.“I hadn’t been around Kyle as coach before but it’s been good for the players to have him around,” said Darrell, the Island’s most successful senior national team coach.“He brings a sternness which has been good for the players.“He knows what it’s like to be a professional and I think the biggest thing he’s helped change is the attitude of some of the players.”Bermuda, who have been grouped with Puerto Rico, Haiti and Barbados, kick-off their qualifying campaign with a clash against the hosts next Wednesday. The group winners and best second-placed team will advance to the next stage of the competition. With a healthy portion of his squad gaining valuable experience playing for Bermuda Hogges this summer, Darrell believes the Under-20s will head to the Isle of Enchantment bristling with confidence.“That was part of the plan from the get-go, to have as any of our players as possible play for the Bermuda Hogges.”“Maurice Lowe (Hogges coach) and I talked about how important it was to give the Under-20 players some experience this summer and he said he would include them whenever he could.“We will be going with some confidence; we know Haiti will be strong and Puerto Rico are hosts so they will have that advantage.”
