U-12 girls pipped in cup final

Bermuda’s Brazilian Football School’s (BBFS) Under-12 girls team came up short in their bid for glory at the Disney Cup football tournament in Orlando, Florida at the weekend. The local team lost 2-1 to Puerto Rico’s FRAIGCOMAR in Saturday’s final in an evenly contested match that could have gone either way.The BBFS side took lead on 20 minutes through a strike from Teyah Lindo. But FRAIGCOMAR hit back either side of the half, with the eventual game winner arriving five minutes from time.Despite stumbling at the final hurdle, coach Shawnette Perott said her players still have much to be proud of.“I am very proud of my team and they fought hard,” she said. “Every match was a tough game and they earned their silver medal.”Perott said the experiences in Florida will benefit her players over the long haul.“The overseas exposure will aid them in their development to provide them with international competition,” she added. “It has always been my personal ambition to advance the level of Bermuda’s female players.”The girls advanced to the final after topping their group (Black) during the round-robin phase of the tournament. It is the first time that a BBFS team has reached a cup final in both domestic and international competition in the organisation’s five-year history. Also doing the Island proud at the Disney Cup were BBFS’s Under-9 and Under-12 boys’ teams and the Under-14 girls who all reached the semi-finals in their respective divisions.Accompanying the teams in Florida were BBFS CEO Cal Blankendal and coach Dennis Brown.
