Bermuda trio play part in Darton title charge
Three Bermudians will look to put their college at the top of the pile when their football campaign kicks off in less than a month’s time.Bermuda internationals Troy Tucker, Jaylon Bather, and Jahmel Swan will play for Darton State College, who are ranked number three in the pre-season polls in the National Junior College Athletic Association. The school’s women’s team is ranked second after both sides had season’s to remember last year.Darton’s head coach Bart Sasnett believes the rankings only make for small reading in the bigger scheme of things as he prepares his troops for another assault on a national title.“I think it’s a great representation of the success of the programme’s past season,” said Sasnett. “I also think it puts a big ‘X’ on your back where everybody’s gunning for you and it makes your work that much harder.”The Cavaliers went into the NJCAA championship as the top seed in 2011, and finished third overall, and the men’s team will host the 2012 national championship tournament in November.Tucker scored six goals including an equaliser that tied his team for third place with Tyler Community College at the 2011 NJCAA Soccer Championships in Phoenix, Arizona. He was also named in First Team All Region XVII, with the side winning the Southeast District Championships and Region XVII Championships to clinch their second consecutive NJCAA Championship Tournament berth.Colleges from as far away as Detroit have reportedly been looking after Tucker, who said the only decision he’s made so far regarding his eventual transfer is to stay another year at Darton College. He became the first freshman in school history to earn First Team All-American honours from the school’s football programme along with team-mate Diego Ramos.Bather will be returning as a sophomore, while Swan will be a freshmen. The Darton women’s programme is also scheduled to face two other teams who earned top-20 spots in the polls, Brevard Community College (8) and conference-foes Georgia Perimeter College (17).The Lady Cavs finished the 2011 season as national runners-up with an 18-2 record.“It’s good because we have to play number one ranked Tyler in our second game of the season, and that’s kind of fun. We could beat them and become number one,” said Ken Veilands, Darton head women’s soccer coach.“You have to be realistic,” Veilands said. “This poll is based off the result of history not this year.”
