New Boulevard coach Derrick Bean believes the future at the club remains bright after a season full of turmoil and a mass exodus of players during the off-season.Blazers gave senior 13 players the boot as part of sweeping changes to rid the problem-plagued club of their social ills.It is understood the entire squad underwent a rigorous screening and vetting process to weed out those players who no longer reflected the long-term vision of the club.The bold move is a direct response to the problematic past 12 months that have seen Boulevard’s name dragged through the mud en route to relegation from the Premier Division.The club had to withdraw from the Friendship Trophy due to safety concerns and forfeit a league fixture because of a shortage of players.It’s believed many of their players were fearful of travelling to the West End due to gang-related issues.With Bean now at the helm, the side will look towards the future as they attempt to regain respect.“Boulevard Blazers is a great club with a strong tradition and fantastic support. I feel privileged to be head coach of the club,” said Bean.“For me, this is one of the most exciting coaching positions in my coaching career.“We will be taking positive steps forward that will help lay the foundation for greater respect for our programme, something that is also a goal of mine and the club’s.Blazers’ president Lou Matthews admitted back in June that the second tier outfit had “lost sight of their community values” and therefore required radical changes.“The club has committed to some sweeping changes in order to reconnect to a community that we had lost sight of and we know these changes are a step in the right direction,” he said in a statement.The changes he made note of have taken place and with an educator in charge of the team for a three-year period, the executive committee appear to be holding their end of the bargain of change.Bean brings a wealth of experience to the coach having coached in Bermuda as well as Canada, and after holding extensive talks with the members at the club believes the club will be able to return to their former glory.“I have had several discussions with the president of Boulevard and I share his and the board members’ vision for the future progress of the club, and together I believe we can bring success to the community and the club in the seasons ahead.”Included in the list of those who have left the club are were influential players Takeyhi Walker, Ajani Gibbons, and Robert Wilson, while striker Angelo Simmons departed last year for champions Dandy Town.Training for the upcoming season began yesterday at the Victor Scott School field.
