Nusum error costs Bermuda

Striker Antwan Russell scored from the penalty spot for Bermuda against Puerto Rico in the Digicel Cup. Bermuda lost 2-1.

Bermuda 1Puerto Rico 2A costly error in injury time by Bermuda skipper John Barry Nusum gifted Puerto Rico an opening group game victory in the Digicel Cup in Haiti yesterday.Bermuda looked set for a creditable draw in their first game under new coach Andrew Bascome after Antwan Russell’s 72nd minute penalty cancelled out Puerto Rico’s second half opener. However, with just moments of the match remaining a defensive mistake by the usually dependable Nusum handed their opponents the victory.Assistant coach Richard Todd had stressed the importance of making an unbeaten start to their campaign, and with a match against group favourites Haiti tomorrow, Bermuda’s hopes of extending their campaign beyond the first round now seem improbable although not impossible.Bascome named two debutants in starting line up - PHC pair Shakir Smith and Jahnai Raynor - against a Puerto Rican side narrowly beaten by World and European Champions Spain in a recent friendly.Bermuda made a bright start with Raynor trying his luck from distance while a good move down the right saw Russell fire over from Domico Coddington’s cross. With Bascome fielding a 4-1-4-1 formation, Bermuda were stifling Puerto in midfield with goalkeeper Freddy Hall a virtual spectator during a closely contested first period.Soon after the break, Hall was forced into a flying save to keeper the scores level, tipping a powerful drive over the bar. At the other end Coddington went close for Bermuda, lobbing inches over after a neat passing exchange between Taurean Manders and Russell. In the 65th minute Puerto Rico took the lead, with Bascome responding by immediately replacing Raynor with Lambe who made his first appearance since injuring his knee last month for Toronto FC.The change paid dividends with Khano Smith winning a penalty for Bermuda when he was fouled after collecting Russell’s knock down from Lambe’s ring wing cross.Russell stepped up to slot home to give the scoreline parity with 18 minutes remaining.Bermuda survived a scare in the 85th minute with Puerto Rico, who face St Martin tomorrow, going close to restoring their lead. In the third minute of injury time Bermuda proved the orchestrators of their own downfall when Puerto Rico punished Nusum’s mistake. The top two teams from Bermuda’s group advance to the next stage of the competition.Bermuda’s starting XIF Hall, T Burgess, D Cox, K Smith, D Ming, T Manders, A Russell, D Coddington, J Raynor, S Smith, J Barry Nusum
