Devonshire Cougars’ newly-promoted captain Chris Caisey jr is eager to get the season underway as he leads his troops onto the field against St George’s in an opening night double-header in the Dudley Eve competition.Four teams begin their respective cup campaigns tonight at Goose Gosling Field (formerly BAA Field) in what should be an electric atmosphere, with the Cougars/Colts clash following the match between Somerset Trojans and PHC.Cougars and Trojans go into the two games as favourites and with the pair bringing in reinforcements for the assault on all available trophies, the stage is set for fireworks.For Caisey, it is time for the waiting to stop and play to begin.“Everybody’s been training and working real hard in order to have a successful 2012/13 season,” said Caisey. “There’s been a good spirit in the Cougars camp thus far and everybody seems eager and ready to get the show on the road.”Caisey makes no qualms about the importance of the Dudley Eve competition, both as preparation for the bigger prize and as a chance to win silverware early in the season.His side will come up against a Colts side that more than held their own against Cougars last season, narrowly losing on several occasions in both the league and FA Cup campaigns, and will fancy their chances of springing an upset this evening.Striker Clay Darrell was the only significant loss during the off season for the East Enders, while the city club revamped their squad with key additions Drewonde Bascome, speedster Lovintz Tota and defender Conneko Trott who will add depth to the back line.Although it is the first competitive game for all of the teams, none will want to lose their opener, a point the Cougars captain emphasised.“Our goal is to try and win every match and implement the style of soccer our coach Mr (Dennis) Brown is trying to store in the Cougars camp.“In a way we are using this as preparation for the league but also we want to win.“No one wants to kick off their season with a loss, so we will go out for the win.”In the night’s opener, old foes renew acquaintances with both teams looking to get off on the right foot.A different look Zebras will take to the field after skipper Antwan Russell and fellow attacker Aquino Grant moved on to different pastures, although the club do have a plethora of exciting young talent coming through the ranks.Trojans added to their talented squad, bringing in Tyrell Burgess from North Village, Ijahmon Mallory from Southampton Rangers and Somerset Eagles’ pair Adolphus Lambert and Dion Woolridge.Along with Zebras, Trojans had the second best scoring record in the league (43) last term. But the team’s porous defence leaked 42 goals, the second worst record behind relegated Boulevard Blazers (48) and will look to make amends for that record starting tonight.
