Mallory thunderbolt helps Trojans to victory

Somerset Trojans’ striker Johnny Bean (left)scored against Robin Hood at Goose Gosling Field. Trojans won 2-0.

Robin Hood 0 Somerset Trojans 2Somerset Trojans continued their impressive start to the season with a convincing victory over Robin Hood at Goose Gosling Field on Saturday night.Trojans, who thrashed PHC 4-1 in the Dudley Eve in midweek, scored two unanswered second half goals through Johnny Bean and Ijahmon Mallory in their opening match of the Digicel Premier Division season. The visitors broke the deadlock when Bean tapped home from close range in the 75th minute after Hood goalkeeper Juan Federico parried substitute Jahi Simmons’ cross-come-shot from the left.New signing Mallory added Trojans’ second when the big defender unleashed a 30 yard thunderbolt into the top corner of Federico’s goal in the 86th minute.Trojans have been widely touted to be this season’s surprise Premier Division package, although skipper Trevin Ming insisted the team still considered themselves underdogs.“It feels good to make a winning start to the season and I thought we defended very well. It was good to keep a shut out,” he said,“We still have some weaknesses we need to improve on but this was a good performance from us.“We still feel like underdogs this season and we will be looking to take each game at a time. We know our game plan and we will be trying to stick to it.”Ming also praised his defensive partner Mallory for his superb late strike.“Ijahmon likes to get involved the attack and it was a great effort,” Ming said. “He is also a real leader for us.”Hood, playing their first game under new coach Kyle Lightbourne, arguably shaded the first period although Trojans went the closest to scoring with Tyrell Burgess hitting the crossbar with a deflected strike from distance. At the other end former India striker Mascarenhas was showing glimpses of quality for Hood and flashed a powerful effort narrowly over Jombwe’s bar.A ragged-looking Hood faded badly after the interval and spent much of the second period largely chasing shadows, unable to cope with Trojans slick passing game.Frustrated by their inability to keep hold of the ball for long periods, Hood seemed to lose their shape as the half wore on allowing a younger, quicker Trojans side to seemingly attack at will. There was no shortage of effort on Hood’s part, though, with defensive pair Robert Wilson and Darren Reitze doing their utmost to keep Trojans at bay. However, with minutes remaining Trojans put the game out of reach for Hood when Mallory was afford far too much time and space to bring the ball out of defence and fire past Federico from distance.Robin Hood: J Federico, S Dietz, M Wood, B Robinson, D Albouy, F Mascarenhas (M Pace, 76), J Crockwell, R Wilson, D Reitze, M Thomas, C HewsSubstitutes not used: S Francis, T Figuerido, M WatsonYellow card: AlbouySomerset Trojans: A Jombwe, T Ming, I Mallory, J Rogers, J Harvey-Outerbridge, A Trott, S Brangman, T Burgess, T Wade (R Simons, 76), G Smith (J Simons, 65), J Bean (M Jones, 81)Substitutes not used: S Bean, D Woolridge, V Blanchette, N SmithGoals: Bean 75, Mallory, 86Referee: A FrancisMan-of-the-match: Mallory (Trojans)
