Morton and Lowe leave Academy

Scott Morton and Maurice Lowe have not been named as part of Bermuda Football Association’s (BFA) National Academy’s new-look coaching staff. While Morton and Lowe have decided to “take a rest”, Larry Smith, Aaron Denkins and Maceo Dill have returned for the re-launch of the National Academy programme.New additions to the Academy team include youth director Richard Todd, national team coach Andrew Bascome, Dennis Brown, Phillip Burgess and Don Vickers.Naquita Robinson, Shawnette Perott and Vinzie Zuill have been brought in to coach the expanding girls’ programme.“Scott and Maurice have decided to take a break away from the National Academy,” said Mark Wade, the BFA player development committee chairman.“They have done a lot of good things while involved and we would like to thank them for their time and contribution to the programme.“They have built a platform that the rest of the coaches can build on and we are confident they will.”A team of goalkeeper coaches, Ray Glasford, Jay Smith and Steve Gould, will conduct a weekly session of specialised training open to all youth players from clubs and schools. The Academy will also establish a monthly mini-camp to offset to the reduced number of boys’ sessions to give players a better balance between academics and football.“I’m excited about the coaches that are coming on board and the dedication they have shown to put the Academy in good stead going forward,” said Academy director Todd.“We are increasing the focus on the girls side and this is a chance for them to get into the set-up at an early age and grow.“The coaches will be available for both academy and clubs players wishing to take advantage of the opportunity.“While the programme is undergoing these structural changes, it will continue to serve as a place to identify and develop our elite players in preparation for placement opportunities in both collegiate and preparatory school athletic programmes and for selection to future national teams.”Try-outs for the Academy programme begin tonight for those football players born in 2001.As part of the BFA’s five-year strategic plan, try-outs for the 2001 intake will also be held on Friday, and on Friday October 5.Sessions for each night will run from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at BFA Field.National Academy coaches will conduct the sessions, assessing the players’ technical abilities and skills, physical qualities, decision making and execution in game situations. Coaches will also assess their attitude and interaction with team-mates and coaches.Players should wear white shorts and a white T-shirt (non-club gear), and bring a water bottle, football boots, shin guards and wear football socks.Parents should register their child in advance, or they can request more information by e-mailing Todd at rtodd@bermudafootball.com or calling the BFA office at 295-2199.
