Wells’ double ‘a career highlight’

First Prev 1 Next Last

Bradford City striker Nahki Wells took his late goal-scoring heroics against Burton Albion in the Capital One Cup all in stride. The Bermudian international struck twice within seven minutes after coming on as a 61st minute sub in the Bantams’ 3-2 come from behind win after extra-time at a rain drenched Coral Windows Stadium on Tuesday night.Trailing 2-0 to the visitors, Wells dragged City back in the match in the 83rd minute after drilling the ball into the top corner from inside the area after being played in by full back James Meredith. He then sent the match into extra-time after converting in the 90th minute from close range with a shot that went in off the upright.Defender Stephen Darby completed City’s late fightback with a stunning strike from 25 yards out in the 115th minute, much to the delight of the home crowd.Earlier, Billy Kee and Aaron Webster were on target for Burton.Wells, 22, said City were the better team throughout the match and thoroughly deserved the win.“The team played well over the course of the 120 minutes . . . we dominated the entire match from start to finish. We were just obviously unfortunate a bit to go behind,” he told The Royal Gazette. “They had two chances and obviously they scored. The second was questionable whether it crossed the line or not but they got the decision.”Wells was one of three subs City coach Phil Parkinson brought on simultaneously in the second half.“I was brought on with two other subs (Kyel Reid and James Hanson) which proved in the end to be the difference,” the ex-Dandy Town player said. “Obviously I grabbed the headlines with my two goals. But the other two guys that came on with me were just as good. They chipped in and played their part and overall I’m really delighted because it was a really good performance.“I felt I did well. I wouldn’t say it was my best performance . . . but it goes up there as one of the best moments of my career. The main thing was that we did our best to advance and obviously we were fortunate enough to come from behind and win.”Wells has now scored five goals in eight appearances this season. With better luck he believes he may have scored a hat-trick against Burton.“It was a bit disappointing I didn’t get the hat-trick,” he admitted. “I should’ve done better on a few other chances.“But in all to get two coming off the bench is not an easy achievement and I’m just happy to do so. I probably had five chances in the match and took two of the five, so I can take something positive from it.“Those two goals helped us get to the next round and I was very delighted someone else stepped up and scored the winner because we deserved to win in the end and we are buzzing from it.”City are now through to the fourth round of the competition for the first time in nearly three decades. The fourth round draw was due to be held following yesterday’s third round clash involving Premier rivals Manchester United and Newcastle at Old Trafford.City, currently fourth in the English League Two standings, are at home to Port Vale on Saturday.n Reggie Lambe and Freddy Hall started in Toronto FC’s 3-0 CONCACAF Champions League group win on Tuesday night over CD Águila of El Salvador 3-0 at Estadio Cuscatlán.The match that was aired live on FOX Soccer was won by the Canadian side courtesy of a Terry Dunfield brace and Quincy Amarikwa strike that kept alive the club’s hopes of advancing. It was Toronto’s first win in all competitions since they defeated Águila 5-1 on August 1 at BMO Field in their opening game of the CCL group stage.Hall kept a clean sheet in a match in which his opponents only had three shots with none on target.Lambe was substituted in the 85th minute for Andrew Wiedeman. He also picked up a caution in the 62nd minute, while almost setting up Ryan Johnson in the 76th when he burst behind the Águila defence and put the ball in front of Johnson, who hit his shot onto the bar from close range. The win sets up a match on October 24 at Santos Laguna of Mexico that they must win by more than two goals, since Santos defeated Toronto 3-1 earlier in the campaign at BMO Field.
