Wells’ boys stun Latics in Cup clash
Nahki Wells’ Bradford City pulled off a stunning penalty shoot-out victory over Premier League Wigan Athletic at the JB Stadium last night to reached the quarter-finals of the English League Cup for the first time since 1989.Wells was substituted in the 65th minute and replaced by Alan Connell but played an important role in the famous win.He tormented the Latics defence in the first half and had one 30-yard blast saved by keeper Al Habsi.As the match went on Bradford defended heroically but Wigan were left to rue a number of missed chances.Jordi Gomez went closest to winning the game with two first-half volleys and fired wide with the best chance of the game in the second half of extra time.When 120 minutes failed to produce a goal, the players lined up for a nervous penalty shoot-out before a crowd of almost 12,000.City triumphed 4-2 thanks to goalkeeper Matt Duke.Wigan’s Shaun Maloney fired over from the spot before Duke saved from Gomez to spark a Bradford celebration.Match statistics showed that Wigan enjoyed 58 percent of possession but failed to capitalise.It was the first that Bradford had progressed beyond the first two rounds in 11 seasons, and the first time since the 1988/89 season they had appeared in the fourth round when they reached the quarter-finals for the second successive season..The last time the Bantams had beaten a Premier League club was in 1995 when they knocked out Nottingham Forrest in the League Cup.
