Trojans canter into Dudley Eve final

Somerset 3 St. George’s 0Somerset Trojans were easy winners in the second Dudley Eve semi-final at St. David’s, after Dion Stovell and Jonathan Bean scored in the first half and defender Ijahmon Mallory closed out the scoring with an injury-time penalty.Against a youthful St. George’s side, Somerset made their experience count as they broke the deadlock after just five minutes when Stovell scored a simple goal into the bottom corner after the St. George’s defence left him unmarked inside the box.The East Enders came into the match looking to reach their first major final since 1996, but Somerset looked more determined as they dictated early play.Bean made it 2-0 in the 19th minute when he stabbed home from close range after Leo Burgess sent a pass into the box that the St. George’s defenders failed to clear as Tyrell Burgess also got involved in the move before Bean beat the keeper at the near post.Somerset were the better team as they controlled the midfield and were deserving of the lead as Burgess went close to adding a third when he blasted a free kick wide of the far post.St. George’s, who struggled for any fluency, had a good chance to pull a goal back late in the first half when Ernest Signor flighted in a free kick from the half-way line that Andrew Jjombwe in the Somerset goal punched clear before Jahron Dickinson on the edge of the box drove over the bar.The start of the second half was delayed for a few minutes when, with both teams on the field and ready to restart, a fight broke out on the club balcony but was quickly brought under control.St. George’s, as predicted, introduced Allan Douglas as a sub early in the second half in a bid to boost their attack. And while they enjoyed more possession, clear cut chances were few as the Somerset back four of Jenson Rogers, captain Trevin Ming, Ijahmon Mallory and Jemeko Harvey-Outerbridge did a good job of protecting their two-goal lead.Somerset still looked threatening on the break and should have cushioned their lead when a smart move exposed the St. George’s defence and Dion Stovell hooked the ball into the box for Burgess who lifted his shot over the top from a good position.Frustration was showing in the St. George’s team as Allan Douglas escaped with only a warning from referee Leroy Wilson after directing some choice words at a linesman. The match was as good as over with only minutes remaining but Somerset continued to waste good chances. Bean failed to find the net when Stovell laid on a perfect pass into his path which he put wide. Moments later substitute Tahj Wade shot over the top after being given space inside the box to take an extra touch, but ultimately lifted the effort high. The match ended with some drama when Burgess laid on a good pass for Stovell who dribbled into the box and was eventually brought down by keeper Burgess as he tried to run the ball around him.Stovell suffered a foot injury in the process and Mallory stepped up to score with a shot into the bottom corner to book their place in this weekend’s final against North Village.Captain Ming said there was still some work to do if the team are to lift a fourth Dudley Eve title.“We have to stay humble and try to keep our heads straight,” he said afterwards. “The main thing we wanted to do was keep a shutout, we knew we had the striking power.“We’re not trying to underestimate anybody, we know what we want to do. We’ve got the talent, we just have to show up on the day.”Somerset: A.Jjombwe; J.Rogers, T.Ming, J.Mallory, J.Harvey-Outerbridge, A.Lambert, T.Burgess, D.Stovell (Nacori Smith 90min), L.Burgess (T.Wade 69min), J.Bean, J.Butterfield (A.Trott 63min).Subs not used: J.Simmons, Najuan Smith, A.Burrows, V.Blanchette.Goals: D.Stovell (5min), J.Bean (19min), Ijahmon Mallory (90min, pen)St. George’s: Z.Burgess; J.Darrell, M.Tucker (T.Ottley 83min), J.Simmons, Ernest Signor, D.Signor, J.Bassett, C.Ottley (W.Stovell 63min), A.Heyliger, J.Dickinson, K.Wilson (A.Douglas 51min).Subs not used: J.Anderson, M.Crane, C.Marshall.Yellow card: J.Darrell.Referee: Leroy WilsonMan of the match: T.Burgess (Somerset).
