Trojans win Dudley Eve trophy

North Village 1 Somerset Trojans 2 (AET)Dion Stovell’s extra time winner powered Trojans to a hard fought come-from-behind victory against Rams in today's Dudley Eve Trophy Final at the National Sports Center.Just when it seemed as though penalties would be required to separate the two sides, Stovell created a goal out of nothing in the second period of extra time to finally settle a cup final that failed to live up to expectations.Earlier, Rams forged ahead against the run of play through a disputed goal from Joshua DeSilva before former Village player Tyrell Burgess equalised for Trojans from the penalty spot after being tripped up in the box. This set the stage for Stovell’s late game winning heroics that left a Village side missing key players Ralph Bean Jr and skipper Jemeiko Jennings for dead.Trevin Ming, the Trojans skipper, could barely contain his joy after raising his team’s first major title in several seasons.“This is a very big win for Somerset and we like this feeling,” he said. “Coach Trott (Mark Trott) has always told us winning is contagious and hopefully this rubs off on everybody and we can play the rest of the season like this.”Ming attributed mental toughness as one of the keys to his team’s success.“We knew we had to keep our heads and everything else would go our way,” he said. “And we always have confidence in our players.”Rams deputising skipper Kaiwon Dill took matters all in stride.“We tried to stick to our game plan and use the elements to our advantage,” he said. “We played a hard game and were a bit unlucky but we can still hold our heads high.”Trojans made a sluggish start to the match and they nearly paid the price when Dill’s defence splitting pass sent Corey Boyce racing towards goal. But with only ‘keeper Shaquille Bean to contend with Boyce hurried his shot into the side netting, much to Trojans’ relief. The close call seemed to jolt Trojans into action and after taking control of midfield the West Enders piled on the pressure in search of the opening.Rams’ ‘keeper Dwayne Adams raced off his line to thwart Jelani Butterfield, Burgess lifted Stovell’s pullback over the bar while Adolphus Lambert curled a shot just wide of the upright.Rams defender Jason Davis also made a timely tackle to deny Trojans Jonathan Bean a free run at goal and then breathed a huge sigh of relief after Burgess’ angled shot took a deflection off his body and sailed past the far post. After soaking up the pressure Rams gave an ominous warning of things to come when Bean raced off his line to clear the ball away from the onrushing Davis and DeSilva.Evidently, Trojans did not heed the warning and found themselves trailing in the 33rd minute after DeSilva lobbed Bean on a quick raid down the middle after being put through by Keishen Bean’s pass over the top of the defence. The goal was allowed to stand even though DeSilva appeared to be standing in an offside position when the ball was played forward.Rams joy, though, was short-lived as Trojans were back on even terms three minutes later when Burgess was sent sprawling in the box. The speedy winger took the spotkick himself, which he buried to the left of the diving Adams.Rams looked more organised in the second half and created ample chances to put the match beyond Trojans’ reach. But their finishing let them down.Bean curled a shot wide after creating space for himself while Lashun Dill had an angled shot saved by Trojans’ ‘keeper Bean. The Trojans ‘keeper was also called upon to save a fierce drive from Bean as Rams continued to look for the breakthrough.Though forced to defend for long spells, Trojans always looked threatening on the counterattack. Stovell fired over the bar after being fed by Ijahmon Mallory, sub Tahj Wade had an ambitious scissors kick also soar over the top while Adams saved at the feet of Bean as the forward shaped up to shoot. Both teams created further chances in extra time with Rams going close to regaining the lead when Dill’s long range effort was tipped over by the alert Bean. The defining moment of the match eventually arrived in the 108th minute when Stovell settled this cup affair with a brilliant solo effort. Gaining possession just inside the box in heavy traffic, the Trojans striker unleashed a left-footed shot through a maze a legs that nestled inside Adams’ far post and sent the Dudley Eve Trophy on its way to Somerset.North Village: D Adams, K Bean, C Boyce (S DeGraff, 63 mins), P Castle, K Dill (capt), P Smith, J Davis, T Jennings, K Talbot, L Dill (K Knights 97 mins), J DeSilva (Z Hendrickson, 90 mins)Subs not used: R Dublin, W MingGoals: J DeSilva (33 mins)Booked: C BoyceSomerset: S Bean, T Ming (capt), I Mallory, J Rogers, J Harvey- Outerbridge, A Lambert (J Simmons (103 mins), S Brangman, D Stovell, T Burgess (A Trott (71 mins), J Butterfield (T Wade (56 mins), J BeanSubs not used: A Jombwe, L Burgess, A Burrows, H Santucci, N Smith, Nacori SmithGoals: T Burgess (36 mins), D Stovell (108 mins)Man of the match: S Bean (Somerset)Referee: Anthony Francis
