Cougars continue win streak
Flanagan’s Onions 1 Devonshire Cougars 3High flying Devonshire Cougars chalked up their fourth league win of the season, defeating Flanagan’s Onions at Goose Gosling Field on Saturday night.Tallies from Darius Cox, Chris Caisey and an Phil Matthews own goal put the match beyond the reach of Onions who scored a late consolation goal through Darren Doolin.Very little separated the two teams and in the end Cougars’ superior finishing would prove to be the difference.Onions’ woes were further compounded by the loss of sub Rich Cumbers who had to be taken to hospital via ambulance after being knocked unconscious in a collision with Cougars ‘keeper Kioshi Trott. The incident, which halted play for at least 25 minutes, occurred just two minutes after Cumbers had come on for Steve Lister with the hosts trailing 2-0.Onions applied early pressure but found themselves trailing in the 11th minute when ‘keeper Stephen Gould allowed an innocuous low drive from Cox to slip through his fingers at the near post and trickle across the goal-line.Undeterred, Onions went about trying to repair the early damage and were nearly back on even terms minutes later when Cougars ‘keeper Trott made a complete hash of an attempted punt upfield. Trott’s partial clearance was intercepted by the ever alert Keston Lewis who then squared the ball for the onrushing Kevin Ronaldson whose point blank shot was deflected for a corner.Ronaldson also shot tamely into the arms of Trott when scoring seemed easier. At the other end Cox nearly doubled Cougars’ lead when he forced Gould to dive full length to gather a curling free kick after Lister was booked for an intentional handball.Cougars threatened again early in the second half when Zekiro White struck the woodwork after connecting with Lovintz Tota’s corner kick. The visitors’ pressure finally paid off when the influential Caisey stroked the ball into the far corner from close range during a counter attack to make it 2-0.Drewonde Bascome nearly made it 3-0 minutes later when he chipped the onrushing Gould only to watch his well-timed effort strike the upright. The match was then put on hold in the 62nd minute after Cumbers and Trott collided chasing a loose ball. Cumbers laid prone on the ground until he was placed on a stretcher and taken to hospital.Despite trailing 2-0, Onions refused to roll over and play dead and seemed to raise their game after Cumbers departed.Ronaldson came close to reducing the deficit when he rattled the woodwork with a left footed blast while team-mate Gavin Thomason should have done better with a free header from yards out that sailed over the bar. Those misses ultimately came back to haunt them in the 76th minute when Onions’ keeper Gould failed to gather a cross and then watched in horror as team-mate Matthews sliced the loose ball into his own net.Onions eventually pulled one back seven minutes from full-time when Doolin got behind the Cougars defence and slotted the ball inside Trott’s far post to make it 3-1.But Cougars nearly added a fourth before the final whistle blew when Bascome’s dipping free kick was tipped over by Gould at the near post.Flanagan’s: S Gould, M Laws, P Matthews, S Butler, J Knight, L Osborne, S Lister (R Cumbers 60th, B Amoro 63rd), D Doolin, G Thomason, K Lewis, J RonaldsonSubs not used: D O’Sullivan, J Donnelly, S UptonGoals: Doolin 83rdBooked: Osborne, ListerCougars: K Trott, D Williams, L Tota (J Mouchette, 79th), K Franks, D Cox, D Daniels, C Caisey, D Bascome, J Seynour (J Smith, 67th), C Brangman, Z WhiteSubs not used: K DeSilva, J Furbert-Wade, T Dill, J SmithGoals: Cox 11th, Caisey 59th, Matthews (Flanagan’s) OGMan of the match: Caisey (Cougars)Referee: K Evans
