Cougars and Rangers advance

Dev.Cougars 3 PHC 1 (aet)Devonshire Cougars booked their place in the semi-finals of the Friendship Trophy last night at Devonshire Rec after PHC missed a penalty in extra time.PHC’s misfortunes started early when captain Cecoy Robinson limped off in the 20th minute with a hamstring injury. And with Shakir Smith, who scored a hat-trick in their last win over Robin Hood, serving a one-match ban for too many yellow cards, PHC were missing a major supplier of their goals. After a flat first half, Cougars upped the tempo early in the second half when midfielder Drewonde Bascome tested Troy Hall Jr in the PHC goal right from the kickoff with an effort from the centre circle that Hall tipped over the bar. The deadlock was finally broken in the 57th minute when Hall failed to collect a high ball into the crowded box from a corner on the right and young winger Kenny DeSilva pounced to smash the ball.Bascome was constantly involved in the action, setting up Domico Coddington with a clever chip into the box and then sending in a freekick that resulted in the ball slicing off Johnny Ball’s boot and just clearing the bar.PHC finally equalised in the 80th minute to send the match into extra time when a ball into the box by Marquel Waldron saw the Cougars defence hesitate just enough to allow Robert Richardson to pounce and score with a shot into the far top corner. After Coddington shot over the top from a good position in extra time, Bascome put Cougars back in front in the 101st minute when he curled a 25-yard freekick into the near bottom corner.PHC had an effort by substitute Dupray Joell ruled out for offside after he converted Tre Ming’s cross. And they should have scored an equaliser four minutes into the second period of extra time when Waldron had his penalty saved by Kioshi Trott after Zeko White handled inside the area. Immediately Cougars went upfield and missed a sitter through Bascome from in front of goal, before substitute Kor-von Tucker settled the tie three minutes from the end when he rounded the advancing Hall and slotted into an empty net.St. George’s 1 Southampton 2Southampton Rangers scored two goals in the last ten minutes to complete a come-from-behind victory in the opening match and join Cougars, Somerset and Dandy Town in today’s semi-final draw.St. George’s took the lead in the 10th minute when Jahron Dickinson scored. And it might have been a different outcome had Dickinson converted another chance early in the second half when he was put through but shot just wide as the offside flag stayed down. A furious Rangers coach Marvin Belboda expressed his displeasure at the non-call to the referee’s assistant with some strong words and was ordered to leave the bench.A turning point for St. George’s was the sending off of Kyle Williams moments later in the 55th minute for kicking out at an opponent. With the minutes ticking away Rangers began to apply more pressure and in the 80th minute were finally rewarded when Vernon Perinchief’s clever backheader caught goalkeeper Mishael Paynter out of position before finiding the back of the net.Five minutes later Rangers scored their winner when Dennis Russell scored with a freekick from the edge of the box after Paynter was blown down by referee Anthony Francis was taking six seconds to release the ball.
