Hornets clinch victory in extra-time thriller
Flanagan’s Onions 3 Dandy Town 5Dandy Town fought back from two goals down to defeat Flanagan’s Onions after extra-time in a thrilling FA Cup first round replay at Goose Gosling Field yesterday.Hornets, the defending FA Cup champions, made an insipid start to the tie, struggling to cope with their opponents’ extra physicality and direct style of play.Neither side created much in the way of clear-cut chances until the final minutes of a scrappy first period, with Hornets’ skipper Damon Ming forcing a flying save from Onions goalkeeper Stephen Gould from a free kick before Pete Robey gave the hosts the lead.It was a goal of effective simplicity with a hopeful hoof from the back bouncing through the heart of Hornets’ defence before falling invitingly for Robey who struck a first-time volley past keeper Treadwell Gibbons.Hornets showed a marked improvement after the break and twice went close to levelling through Raymond Beach and Kwonde Lathan who were both denied by Gould in quick succession.Robey then put Onions further ahead, somewhat against the run of play, when he found space on the edge of the box and curled an effort past a sluggish Gibbons who misjudged his dive, allowing the ball to bounce over his body.A minute later, though, Hornets reduced the deficit when Lathan made amends for his earlier miss by sweeping the ball past Gould from close range to ignite his team’s impressive comeback.Hornets were by now in the ascendancy and should have levelled when Angelo Simmons slalomed his way through Onions’ defence before ballooning his effort into the BAA clubhouse. It seemed only a matter of time before Town would draw level although Gibbons did his best to hand Onions another goal when his miskick fell to Keston Lewis who couldn’t thread his shot into the vacant net from just inside the Town half.In the 81st minute Hornets’ second half dominance paid dividends when two of their substitutes combined to send the game into extra-time. Saki Tuzo showed an impressive turn of speed to burst past Darren Doolin before firing a low, hard cross into the path of Seion Darrell who made no mistake from the edge of the six yard box.Tempers flared at the end of regulation time when Onions defender Tom Godfrey brought down Simmons with a desperate lunge.Referee Anthony Francis seemed poised to show Godfrey his second yellow card before a minor scuffle broke out in front of the Onions bench, distracting the official who then booked Sam Butler instead of Godfrey, much to the chagrin of Hornets coach Jomar Wilkinson.Onions looked visibly tired during extra-time and found themselves trailing when Lathan rounded Gould before slotting home for his brace to make it 3-2.Beach added another in the second half of extra-time although Onions still kept fighting to keep their cup dreams alive.Lewis gave his team a slim chance of taking an enthralling game into penalties when he skipped past Gibbons before tapping into the net. However, Simmons extinguished those hopes when he scored his side’s fifth goal in the final minute of extra-time.“I was very pleased with our second half comeback.” said Hornets coach Wilkinson. “We once again made a slow start and struggled with the elements and (Onions’) direct approach.“But, we knew it was going to be a difficult tie and we settled down after the break and I felt we deserved our victory.”Dandy Town: T Gibbons, D Ming, K Wade, R Beach, L Simmons (S Darrell, 50), A Rocker (S Tuzo, 50), J Stowe (D Butterfield, 66), K Tucker, T Webb, K Lathan, A SimmonsSubstitutes not used: R Wells, D Chambers, C Burgess, F FranksonYellow cards: TuckerGoals: Lathan, 66, 103 Darrell, 81, Beach, 115, Simmons, 119Flanagan’s Onions: S Gould, N Forrester, S Butler, T Godfrey, A Kelly, S Lister (J Khan, 115), D Doolin, R Cumbers, K Lewis, K Ronaldson (A White, 103), P RobeySubstitutes not used: D O’Sullivan, P Matthews, S UptonYellow cards: Godfrey, ButlerGoals: Robey, 43, 65, Lewis, 116Referee: A FrancisMan of the match: D Ming (Hornets)
