Hood earn late point but move closer to the drop

Robin Hood 1 Southampton 1Robin Hood’s never-say-die attitude earned them an injury time equaliser at Goose Gosling Field yesterday, but the point hardly helped their survival hopes.Captain Darren Reitz found the net with a glancing header from a free kick two minutes into injury to cancel out a 75th minute effort from Rangers substitute Keedai Astwood. And though Hood pressed hard for the winner during three more minutes of injury time, they had to settle for a share of the points. With just four games remaining in the Premier Division, Hood remain in last place in the tables and 10 points from safety. Two matches against Rangers in three days took its toll on Hood who were without key players, including main striker Antoine Russell as coach Kyle Lightbourne played himself up front. The closest either team came to scoring was midway through the first half when Jesse Kirkland was put through on the left side of the penalty box. His attempted curling shot into the far corner was just wide as Jason Smith was quick off his line to narrow the angle. The game picked up after that as an even better chance fell to Dennis Russell in the 31st minute when he ran onto a through ball into the box before smashing his effort wide of the near post. After an exciting 3-3 in the FA Cup on Thursday night, both teams were finding it difficult to break the deadlock as a far post diving header from Russell minutes later was blocked by Timmy Figureido in the Hood goal . Then midfielder Vernon Perinchief was on target with a 20 yard free kick but Figureido was equal to the task, tipping the effort over the bar.A similar save by the Rangers ‘keeper early into the second half denied Hood an opening goal when Takeyhi Walker chipped the ball into the box from 30 yards and lanky defender Bayon Robinson’s glancing header was turned over the top by Smith.Rangers freshened up their attack by bringing Astwood on for Milton Ferreira as they enjoyed a good spell midway through the half. Coach Marvin Belboda introduced himself for Ezekiel Stoneham and within three minutes helped set up Astwood’s opener when after some nice touches outside the Hood penalty area involving Perinchief saw Belboda send Astwood through on goal and he neatly slotted the ball past the advancing Figureido to give Rangers a deserved lead. However, Hood kept working hard late in the game as Fredy Mascarenhas needed treatment for a knee injury and it was in time added on for that injury that the home side managed to produce an equaliser when Marcelas Thomas flighted the ball into the box from a free kick and the ball glanced off Reitz’s head and into the far corner.Robin Hood: T.Figureido; S.Dietz, J.Duffy, D.Reitz, B.Robinson, R.Wilson, M.Thomas, T.Walker, K.Lightbourne, F.Mascarenhas, J.Kirkland.Goal: D.Reitz.Yellow card: D.Reitz (90 min)Southampton: J.Smith; K.Simmons, J.Charles, T.Russell, C.Woolridge, J.Tucker, E.Stoneham (M.Belboda 72min), M.Ferreira (K.Astwood 53min), V.Perinchief, R.Lowe (S.Astwood 76min), D.Russell.Goal: K.Astwood (75 min)Referee: L.WilsonMan of the match: V.Perinchief (Southampton).St. George’s 1 Wolves 2St. George’s failed to hold onto a lead given to them by Jarreua Hayward in the 32nd minute as Wolves hit back to clinch victory at Wellington Oval to virtually seal their safety in the top flight for another season. This was a match that st. George’s needed to win to keep alive their hopes of survival and Hayward’s opener gave them a boost before John Barry Nusum eqwualised for Wolves just minutes later. Derreck Brangman dealt the home side a fatal blow when he hit the winner in the 75th minute, giving Wolves the three points that moves them ahead of Flanagan’s Onions in the standings, but more importantly 10 points clear of the bottom two teams and with only four matches remaining.PHC 0 North Village 1Jemeiko Jennings’ eighth minute goal dealt a severe blow to PHC’s title hopes at Southampton Oval as Devonshire Cougars, following their victory over Somerset on Friday night, have a six point cushion over Dandy Town and North Village at the top of the Premier Division. The Zebras were eight points behind Cougars going into their match and were looking to cut that lead back to five points. However, Jennings’ early strike was allowed to stand as the winner as both Town and Village moved ahead of PHC to remain six points behind the leaders with four matches to play.
