Crawley extend Jonte’s contract

Jonte Smith has been offered another one-year deal by League Two Crawley Town

Bermudian striker Jonte Smith has had an initial one-year contract with League One Crawley Town extended for another year.Smith, who is currently on loan with Conference South side Eastbourne Borough, has been offered a new one-year with the Red Devils deal along with centre-half Louis John.“We think a lot of both Louis and Jonte,” Crawley manager and former Rotherham United striker Richie Barker stated on his club’s website. “They are still young and by no means the finished article. But they are two players who fit into what we are trying to do at the club, which is to develop and work with good young footballers."Smith, 18, signed a one-year contract with Crawley nearly a year ago after hitting 20 goals playing with the club’s academy and reserve teams.Earlier this season the budding professional footballer further underlined his potential during a prolific loan spell at Ryman Premier League side Metropolitan Police where he banged in 24 goals, including two hat-tricks, in 19 appearances.He eventually rejoined parent club Crawley where he made his first team debut as a sub against Bournemouth last December and went on to make three additional appearances all off the bench.Smith was loaned out to Conference South side Eastbourne Borough earlier this month.He made his debut with The Sports during a 2-1 home win against Hayes & Yeading United at Priory Lane Stadium on March 19 and also started in the club’s 1-0 away loss to Chelmsford City earlier this week.Smith, who played youth level football at North Village before travelling to the UK to pursue a professional career, is determined to make the most of his time at the East Sussex club who are currently 18th in the 22-team Conference South League.“Hopefully I’ll be able to do really well for my new loan team,” Smith said. “It’s all about continuing my development and working on becoming a complete player.”The Sports are away to tenth place Bromley today.Bradford City’s Bermudian striker Nahki Wells has been voted among the top ten League Two performers for the season along with Bantams teammates Gary Jones and James Hanson.Wells has had another stellar season with City and is the club’s current leading goal scorer with 18 goals in all competitions.Last month the former Dandy Town player became the first Bermudian to play at the new Wembley Stadium during City’s 5-0 League Cup Final loss to Premier side Swansea.The Bantams are the first fourth tier side to reach a major English domestic cup final in 51 years.
