Academy teams head to Alabama for Open Cup
Two of Bermuda Football Association’s (BFA) National Academy teams will be represented at next week’s Open Cup Tournament in Decatur, Alabama.Players involved with the National Academy’s Under-14 and Under-16 teams will get the opportunity to showcase their budding talents during the college showcase tournament boasting some 240 national and international teams.The event will take place at Jack Allen Soccer Complex which sits on 27 acres of land and boasts 13 football pitches.The Under-14s will compete in two separate divisions: the Under-14 Boys Super Group featuring the likes of Brazil’s Guarani Futebol Clube and Mexico’s CF Monterrey Rayados and another Under-14 age group boasting several US teams including Vestavia Hills Soccer Club. The Under-16s will also come up against US teams such as Evansville Soccer Club, Mississippi Fire and Manderville Lakers in their respective division.The tournament will provide Bermuda’s players with much needed exposure ahead of next year’s FIFA Under-17 World Cup qualifiers and also afford them the chance to impress in front of college coaches and scouts in attendance.During their stay in Alabama National Academy footballers will visit Darlington School which houses the Darlington Soccer Academy.“During the visit to Darlington School players will be given an opportunity to tour the campus and observe classes before playing in friendly warm up matches v (versus) Darlington Soccer Academy,” said National Academy director Richard Todd.National Academy trio Vance Wall-Brown, Jacob Greene and Jai Burgess are all currently enrolled at Darlington School.National coach Andrew Bascome and National Academy staff coaches Phillip Burgess, Don Vickers, Maceo Dill and Karl Roberts will accompany the two local academy teams to the US.The National Academy’s Under-14s and 16s, who depart for Alabama next Wednesday, will be bolstered by the inclusion of some of their overseas based colleagues.
