Bermuda coach Andrew Bascome has urged his players to ‘keep it simple and forget the fancy stuff’ as they go in pursuit of a gold medal at the NatWest Island Games. That clear and simple message comes after Bermuda’s 6-1 defeat in their last outing against an efficient and well-drilled England C side at the National Sports Centre last month.Bascome believes the Island’s players have a tendency to over-elaborate and make the game appear far more complicated than is necessary. But should they do the simple things and do them well then he is confident his side can achieve their remit of winning the host nation’s first gold in Island Games football.“One point I would like to get across to the local players is that they can’t be too simplistic,” said Bascome, who said he learned plenty from his side’s defeat against England C.“Football’s a simple game: it’s about passing, moving and receiving, but I think some times we try too much of the difficult stuff to get some type of recognition.“What they don’t realise is the true quality of a player is whether he can play it simple, play the ball early and get the ball under control effortlessly.“We need to come with that mindset because too many times the local players try to do something extraordinary when there is no need.”Falkland Islands, Froya and Greenland are the only football teams visiting Bermuda, with Isle of Wight, Guernsey, Alderney, Gibraltar, Isle of Man and Jersey’s opting out due to the high travel costs.Bascome accepts the Gombey Warriors are red-hot favourites to win the competition but has warned his young team against complacency.“We should be looking to win a medal for sure — that’s something I’m looking to do, so the players have to be committed and dedicated as well,” he said.“We have to want to play to win, we’re the home side and we have to want to go out and play good football.“We’re not really aware of the level of the opposition but we will not be taking them for granted.“It’s important we focus on our qualities and what we’re capable of achieving as a team.”Bermuda will be missing several of their ‘big hitters’ with Bradford City’s Nahki Wells, Toronto FC’s Reggie Lambe and Crawley Town’s Jonte Smith all absent due to club commitments.Rather than rue the loss of those key players, Bascome has challenged his squad’s newcomers to make the most of the experience and show plenty of desire.“It has to be a team effort, we have to defend and attack collectively and not rely on any particular player,” Bascome said.“We’re are missing the likes of Reggie and Nahki but it gives a chance to the local players to show what they can do.“It should be a good experience for our young players and they should come to play with enthusiasm.”Bermuda start their Island Games campaign against Greenland at North Field on Sunday at 8pm.
