Wells looks to score against former club
Nahki Wells is determined to continue his bright start to the season against his former club Carlisle United at Valley Parade on Saturday.Wells and his Bradford City team-mates take on the Cumbrians in their season home opener at Coral Windows Stadium. The Bermudian striker, who had a brief spell at Brunton Park two years ago, has already hit the target twice this season to pick up where he left off from the previous campaign which saw him top the Bantams’ scoring charts with 26 goals in all competitions.Wells scored in City’s away draw with Bristol City in their league opener last weekend and again in the Bantams’ Capital One Cup loss to Championship side Huddersfield Town earlier this week. And he is now champing at the bit to hit the back of the net against his former club to maintain his impressive scoring streak and his team’s promising start to the 2013-14 league campaign.“I definitely want to score against them and moreso get the better of them by winning,” Wells told The Royal Gazette. “I just want to get going, put in a good performance and get the win.“I’m just going in the match as any other game and do the best I can. And if I can put in a good performance I know I will score. But the main thing is to get three points because a good start is vital to our campaign.”Wells is confident the Bantams can achieve their first win of the season against a Carlisle side fresh off a victory over Blackburn Rovers in the Capital One Cup earlier this week.“I look at us as title contenders and a bigger club so I see no reason why we can’t beat them,” he said. “If we perform like we did last Saturday (against Bristol City) I don’t see any reason why we can’t get the desired result. It’s our first home game of the season, so we will have a good crowd and it’s going to be massive.”Bradford are presently tenth in the league standings while Carlisle are 13 places below them in 23rd following a crushing 5-1 home defeat to Leyton Orient in their season opener.Wells signed a short term deal with the Cumbrians in January, 2011 and made three appearances as a substitute for the League One club before he was released by Carlisle manager Gregg Abbott four months later. The former Dandy Town man insists he doesn’t have an axe to grind with Abbott.“I don’t hold any grudges against the manager and just look at the positives,” Wells said. “I’m actually happy because what he did was the right thing.“He told me that releasing me was the best thing for my career, and it definitely was so I don’t hold anything against him. I’m thankful for what Carlisle did for me.”
