North Village 2 Southampton Rangers 1Two late first-half goals from teenager Jahquan Smith-DeShields was all North Village needed to book their spot in the semi-finals of the Dudley Eve competition at St John’s Field on Saturday.Eighteen-year-old Smith-DeShields struck in the 36th and 42nd minutes as Village put themselves firmly on control of a match that Rangers needed to win following their 5-0 defeat to PHC last Monday. And though substitute Keedai Astwood gave them faint hope with a well-taken goal in the 80th minute, Village held onto the one-goal lead in the dying minutes.A smart move outside the Rangers penalty box produced the opening goal for Smith-DeShields when Jason Lee created the opening with a pass to Keishen Bean who got behind the Rangers defence and squared the ball to Smith-DeShields who side-footed the ball past Jason Smith.Pierre Smith went close to doubling the Village lead three minutes later but he blasted his effort over the bar from a good position, before Smith-DeShields pounced to add his second minutes later with another composed finish after the Rangers defence failed to clear. The youngster was denied a hat-trick right at the end of the half when his attempted lob over Smith was tipped over the bar by the keeper. The hat-trick again eluded the teenager as he blasted over the bar from a turn and shoot on the hour as Village introduced two of their summer signings as subs, with former St George’s player Jahron Dickinson replacing Jason Lee and Takeyhi Walker, formerly of Boulevard and Robin Hood, coming on for Pierre Smith.Vernon Perinchief headed a clearance off the line for Rangers midway through the second half before Rangers finally pulled a goal back at the other end in the 80th minute when Jason Smith’s long kick upfield saw Troy Hall Jr hesitate slightly as he came off his line and Keedai Astwood, a second-half replacement for Khalil Symonds, pounced and took the ball around the keeper before smashing it home from a narrow angle. The result leaves Village and PHC to battle for the top spot in Group B when they meet on Friday at Devonshire RecNorth Village: T Hall, T Burgess, S Lee, D Tankard, J Crockwell, J Jennings, J Davis, K Bean, J Lee (J Dickinson, 53), P Smith (T Walker, 58), J Smith-DeShields (K Dill, 74)Goals: J Smith-DeShields, 36, 42Southampton: J Smith, J Dill, M Burch, M Tankard, M Lowe, V Perinchief, E Stoneham, K Symonds (K Astwood 55), J Dyer, R Lowe, A Bean.Goal: K Astwood, 80Referee: E Holmes
