Brown named Bermuda Under-20 coach

Bermuda Under-20 boss Dennis Brown

Devonshire Cougars boss Dennis Brown has been appointed head coach of Bermuda Under-20s.Brown, who won the Triple Crown with Cougars last season, will lead the Under-20s in their World Cup qualifiers next summer.He will be assisted by Hamilton Parish’s Keishon Smith and ex-Wolves boss Don Vickers.“The Under-20 men’s national team will begin their preparations for the World Cup qualifying tournament next summer under newly-appointed coach Dennis Brown,” said National Academy director Richard Todd.“Coach Brown will take the reins of the 1995, 1996, and 1997 boys player pools of the National Academy and be assisted by Don Vickers and Kieshon Smith.”Bermuda Football Association’s National Academy will look to piggy back off the recent success by their teams as they prepare for the next phase of development.With the Under-17 women’s national side finishing fourth in theConcacaf World Cup qualifications in Haiti and several boys’ teams enjoying success overseas, the BFA said they wouldn’t be resting on their laurels.Instead, the Association will be gathering the best talent in each age group and, beginning Friday, put them through their paces ready for international competitions.“Bermuda Football Association is pleased to announce that the National Academy programme will resume training for the 2013-2014 year beginning Friday,” added Todd. “The National Academy programme has enjoyed a successful year that has been highlighted by the recent good showing of the Under-15 boys and Under-17 girls national teams in competitions in the Concacaf region over the summer.“The programme will also strive to build upon these performances and continue to help identify and develop our elite players for opportunities in colleges, prep schools and professional academies, while preparing our teams for international competitions.”Included on the calendar of events for the 2013-14 season is a tryout for boys and girls born after 2002. There will also be Under-20 trials. Todd added: “The 2002 boys and Under-14 girls intake groups will have open tryouts for player assessment. The dates and times for these sessions will be announced in the coming week through the media and through the schools. Registration at BFA Field is required before each session.Following these evaluation sessions, the coaching staff will make their recommendations on selections to the player pool for the 2013-2014 year. Included in the list of achievements from the development programme in the past twelve months are the Under-16 boys’ championship in the Open Cup tournament in Florida and the Under-12 and Under-13 championships in the Naples Cup, also in Florida.Any player interested in attending the Under-20 evaluation sessions can e-mail rtodd@bermudafootball.com to register.
