Coach Bean continuing to plunder goals in Corona League

North Village stalwart Ralph Bean Jr is relishing his duel role as the club’s Premier Division coach while starring for their new-look Corona League team.

Since hanging up his boots last season to become coach of his beloved Village, the prolific striker has returned to competitive action, albeit in a different environment.

The 33-year-old is now starring for the Rams’ Corona League side, joining forces with several former teammates who are keen to prolong their careers at a more relaxed level.

Rams’ star-studded side includes former top-flight players Aljame Zuill, Kofi Dill, Randy Spence, Zane Hendrickson and Vernon Tankard.

Unsurprisingly, considering the calibre of those players, Rams are top of the table after thrashing defending champions Robin Hood 6-0 before hammering Valley 12-2.

“The Corona League is a perfect transition for someone coming from the top flight,” said Bean, whose Village are second in the Premier Division.

“One of the reasons for this is because the time commitment is not as intense as the Premier Division, but it’s still a somewhat competitive league.

“There is a good mix of players in the league and they have done a good job of creating a fun relaxed atmosphere.

“It’s also a blessing to play on a true surface for every game.”

Forging a formidable strike partnership with ex-Bermuda striker Zuill, Bean has already bagged five goals this season including a hat-trick against Valley.

He said he was also excited about the challenge of his first full season as Village’s Premier Division coach.

“It feels good to be able play at a more relaxing level. Really, it’s just fun,” he said.

“We’re having a good time because none of us have anything to prove. With less emphasis on the results it’s a lot easier to enjoy the game of football itself.

“I’m really enjoying the challenge (of coaching). I have to commend the players for making the transition an easy one for me.

“I also have good support around me and are making good progress as a team and that’s all I can ask for.”
