Coach Lowe: ‘We were lucky’
Southampton 3
Wolves 2
Southampton Rangers came away with maximum points from their Premier clash with Wolves at Southampton Oval.
First half goals from Vernon Perinchief and Keedai Astwood and another from Demarlo Curtis after the break earned the home team all of the spoils.
Wolves replied through goals from Shaki Pearman and Vince Minors (penalty) either side of the half.
The visitors dominated the majority of possession but were left to rue a plethora of gilt edge chances that went abegging when scoring seemed easier.
Among the chief offenders was the usually reliable Minors who squandered a couple of sitters in front of the uprights.
Rangers coach, Maurice Lowe, admitted that his team were lucky to come away with maximum points thanks in no small part to Wolves’ poor finishing in the attacking third.
“We were fortunate to come away with the three points,” he said. “Wolves were very spirited and made a contest of it and we were able to hang on and get the positive result.” Wolves coach Mark Jennings said his team’s poor finishing came back to haunt them.
“We literally missed a host chances,” he lamented. “We had over 65 percent of the play and just couldn’t finish in the end.”
Rangers rocked the visitors back on their heels after jumping out to an early 2-0 lead.
Midfielder Perinchief broke the deadlock with the game barely five minutes old when his free kick from outside the box took a deflection en route to the back of the net.
Celebrations among the home crowd had barely subsided when striker Astwood converted on a breakaway to cap a superb solo effort and double Rangers’ lead.
Wolves created openings at the other end of the pitch but were unable to capitalise.
But there would be no denying the visitors moments before the half when midfielder Pearman scored directly from an inswinging corner kick.
The goal lifted Wolves’ spirits and they were back on even terms early in the second half when striker Minors converted from the penalty spot after Rangers fullback Jamel Hill handled in the box.
Wolves continued to press in search of another goal and this ultimately led to their downfall as they were caught short at the back on a counterattack that Rangers capitalised upon to complete their third league win of the season.
Curtis let the air out of the visitors’ spirited fightback when he tapped home a rebound to finish off a quick break.
“We pressed and got caught on the counter and that was all she wrote,” added Jennings. “But Rangers did a great job early on.”
Parish 1
St David’s 3
St David’s came from behind to record their first win of the season after getting the better of hosts Hamilton Parish at Wellington Oval.
Goals from Angelo Cannonier, Shakil Robinson and Dominique Lambert completed Warriors’ comeback after falling behind to a Donovan Thompson strike.
Thompson gave the hosts the early lead only to see Cannonier level matters shortly after. Robinson grabbed what ultimately proved to be the game winner after the break before Lambert put the result further beyond Parish’s reach with an insurance goal.
