Smith eager to impress after returning to Crawley

Smith has rejoined Crawley Town after loan spells at non-league sides Havent and Waterlooville and Metropolitan Police

Jonte Smith has rejoined parent club Crawley Town following a loan spell at two different clubs.

Smith was an unused substitute during the League One club’s goalless home draw with Walsall at Checkatrade.com Stadium at the weekend.

The 19-year-old rejoined Crawley last week from a two-month stint with non-league clubs Havant and Waterlooville and Metropolitan Police.

Smith was loaned out to Waterlooville in mid-September after being sidelined for nearly two months through injury. He injured his ankle in a tackle playing for Crawley in a pre-season friendly with Championship side Millwall.

After seeing limited action during his stint at Havant and Waterlooville, Smith was loaned out to Met Police for a month where he continued his recovery before being called back to his parent club.

Crawley host Swindon today at Checkatrade.com Stadium where Smith hopes to be involved.

“I’m just looking for any opportunity really,” he said. “It’s just down to me, whether I get the opportunity, to take it.

“I’m enjoying being back at Crawley and playing football at my parent club. It’s exciting and hopefully I can get some playing time and a few goals.”

Smith left Bermuda last June keen to continue his development in the English game.

But the ankle injury he suffered against Millwall put his career on hold and sent him down a long path to recovery.

“I felt like I was doing pretty well in pre-season and done well enough to earn a start against Millwall,” Smith recalled. “It’s a bit sad to see my pre- season cut short by injury, but that’s how it goes sometimes.

“It’s the first serious injury I’ve had and obviously it’s a bit frustrating not being able to continue training, which I love doing and playing games. I guess that’s how it goes sometimes and I was able to cope with it.”

If it was any consolation, Smith said recovering from his ordeal has made him mentally stronger.

“It (injury) helped me to get mentally stronger working towards coming back from this and strengthening it to make sure it’s not going to hinder me in the future,” he explained.

Smith’s loan spell with Met Police was his second playing stint with the Ryman Premier League side.

During his previous stint at the club he banged in 24 goals in 19 appearances to underline his potential.

“It was nice being reunited with former colleagues,” said Smith, who scored two goals in six appearances for Met Police. “They had a lot of new faces there but there were some players left from last season. I enjoyed meeting with the management again and the few players that I had known and making some new friends as well.

“I knew that it would be nearly impossible to come back to Met Police and do better than I did last time. I just kept the mindset of making sure I’m playing well and working hard and that was the main thing.

“I may not have scored as many goals as I did last time. But I was contributing to the team in a lot of other ways.”
