Goater linked with managerial jobs in UK

Shaun Goater hopes to kick off his managerial career in the UK.

Shaun Goater is believed to be interested in managerial roles at English League Two sides Bury and Scunthorpe United.

It had been reported that Goater has applied for the vacant Bury manager’s job and was at their FA Cup draw with Cambridge United last week.

Ronnie Jepson, the former Bury striker, recently took over as their caretaker manager after the sacking of Kevin Blackwell.

Jepson has been told that he will remain in the job until January when Goater will be hoping to take the reins.

A source close to Goater, who left Bermuda in the summer to pursue a coaching career in Britain, told the Manchester Evening News that the former Premier League striker believes that he has what it takes to succeed in the hot seat.

“He’s determined and he’s got his eye on Bury,” the source said. “He’s been to see them a couple of times and he thinks it’s perfect for him.”

Goater has also been linked with the manager’s job at Scunthorpe and was in the crowd to watch their weekend win away to Portsmouth.

Should Goater be appointed to either post, he could turn to Joe Royle, the vastly experienced former Everton and Manchester City manager, as his assistant.

Royle was Goater’s manager when he was signed from Bristol City in 1998. The Bermudian plundered 103 goals in 189 appearances and became affectionately known as the Goat.

Goater stepped down as coach of North Village, the Premier Division side, at the start of the year after four seasons with his boyhood club.

The 43-year-old led Village to seven trophies during his tenure, including the league title, the Friendship Trophy three times, two Dudley Eve titles and a Charity Cup.

He was offered the Bermuda coach’s job on a temporary basis before the appointment of Andrew Bascome, but turned it down.
