Rangers sunk by Lewis hat-trick

Onions hat trick hero Keston Lewis gives Rangers sub Akale Bean the slip

Flanagan's Onions 4 Southampton Rangers 2A Keston Lewis hat-trick fired Flanagan's Onions to their fourth league win of the season at Goose Gosling Field yesterday. The Trinidadian striker put on a clinical display of marksmanship, converting in the 30th, 50th and 79th minutes as Onions made Rangers pay dearly for some loose defending.Striker Greg Muir scored Onions' remaining goal that gave his team the lead for good.Rangers replied through a thunderous strike from the boot of midfielder Vernon Perinchief and striker Reggie Lowe, who forced the ball over the line during a goalmouth scramble. The result lifted Onions from sixth to fifth in the Premier Division table with 12 points from eight matches, level with fourth-placed North Village.Mick Ward, the Onions player-coach, was pleased with his team's overall display, in particular Lewis's clinical efforts in the attacking third.“Keston did not score too many goals last season, but this season he seems to have hit the ground running,” he said. “He has scored seven goals in eight games and hopefully he keeps scoring and the lads can help him out and score a few more as well.”Ward said that the key to his team's victory was their high tempo and tackling throughout the match.“We had the energy and winning the second ball certainly helps to beat any team,” he added. “I thought we had chances to make it a bit bigger to be honest.“When we were 2-0 up, they opened up at the back and we were able to push on and maybe we should have had more than four.”Rangers pressed from the kick-off and appeared the likelier of the two teams to break the deadlock as Onions defended for a long spell.Lowe, the Rangers striker, had two shots from a tight angle blocked during a raid down the middle moments before team-mate Willie Clemons had a shot from nearly the exact position flash past an upright.Lewis sprang the offside trap at the opposite end, but hurried his shot over the bar as Jason Smith, the Rangers goalkeeper, raced off his line. The visiting side suffered a setback when McQuinn Burch, the captain, limped off in the 21st minute with an ankle injury suffered during a midfield tackle.Things then quickly went from bad to worse for Rangers as Onions capitalised on some poor defending twice inside of a minute to stop their opponents dead in their tracks. An unmarked Muir broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when he tapped in Pete Robey's free kick at the back post. And before the dust had settled Smith was picking the ball out of the back of the net after Lewis converted Nathan Peskett's pass in the middle from close range to send Onions into the dressing room at the half with 2-0 cushion.Rangers fell farther in arrears early in the second half and once again it was poor defending that proved to be their undoing.A clearance from, Stephen Gould, the Onions goalkeeper, was allowed to bounce over a static Rangers defence in the area and fall freely to Lewis who volleyed past the exposed Smith with aplomb to make it 3-0.Perinchief pulled one back for the visiting side in the 69th minute with a cracking left-footed volley from outside of the box after the Onions defence switched off.But any thoughts Rangers might have had of making a comeback were derailed ten minutes later when Lewis latched on to a partial clearance and drove the ball past the outstretched hands of Smith at the near post to complete his treble and restore his team's three-goal lead.Lowe shaved the deficit back to two goals when he scrambled a headed cross across the goalmouth over the line in heavy traffic in the 85th minute. But by then Onions had the points virtually in the bag.Flanagan's Onions (4-4-2): S Gould — D Doolin, G Muir, J Fox (sub: L Osborne, 80min), J Knight (sub: N Parker, 70) — K Lewis, N Peskett (sub: B Amaro, 73), P Robey, P Matthews — S Butler, S Lister.
