Ruthless Flanagan’s take care of business

Flanagan’s Onions 5

Robey 22, 59, Minors 51, Amaro 80, Lewis 85

St David’s 0

Flanagan’s Onions ended the first half of the season with a thrashing of St David’s at Goose Gosling Field on Saturday night.

Peter Robey scored a brace and solo strikes from Keston Lewis, Brian Amaro and an own goal from Otis Minors captured the points for the home side.

“What a result for us tonight, we set out to get a job done and we got it done and the points are with us,” Mike Ward, the Onions coach, said.

“It was vital to go into the Christmas break with some sort of form and to get the result the way we did was tremendous.”

It was not for the sake of trying for the Islanders, who had a bright spark in the match in Aaron Crockwell, who almost gave his side the lead.

His shot in the opening moments of the match was well saved by Sam Gould in goal for Onions.

Robey would give his side the lead midway through the fist half, when he curled his effort past Corey Richardson from 25 yards.

Crockwell was again in the thick of things just after the first goal, being put in by Fiqre Crockwell, but again Gould was equal to the task.

Minors would inadvertently put into his net six minutes into the second half after being put under pressure by Lewis in the penalty area.

Richardson produced a fine save from Lewis, who came into his own in the second half, diving low to his left to keep out the effort.

Robey would grab his second of the game with a half-hour remaining, and another one for the highlights, when he capped off a neat interplay between the Onions midfield by rifling his shot past Richardson, who had no chance.

Defender Jake Fox had a chance to get his name on the scoresheet, but his long-range shot was safely collected by Richardson.

Substitute Amaro scored with ten minutes left in the match, after Nathan Peskett was hacked down in the area, leaving Anthony Francis, the referee, no choice but to point to the spot.

Amaro neatly side-footed home, although Richardson guessed the right way and managed to get a hand on it.

Lewis finished off the scoring five minutes from time, rounding Richardson and tapping home into an empty net.

“We got chances and managed to put them away, so I’m pleased overall,” Ward said. “We have a cup game coming up this weekend.

“We can relax in regards to the league, but the play tonight was very encouraging.”
