Kenny Bascome, the St David’s manager, has challenged his players to make history by winning the club’s first major piece of silverware this season.

While their cricket side has enjoyed remarkable success in recent years, winning three domestic trophies last term, the St David’s football team have been very much the poor relation.

Bascome, however, is hopeful that sorry statistic can be put to bed this term with St David’s just one game away from the reaching the Friendship Trophy final.

St David’s have been drawn against Somerset Trojans in the semis at Wellington Oval on Boxing Day at 2.30pm — and Bascome is confident his side can prevail.

“At this particular time it doesn’t make much difference who you are playing against,” he said. “I believe St David’s have the ability when the guys put their minds to it.

“At the end of the day I believe the [Friendship Trophy] will be the first football trophy of significance St David’s will bring back to the club.

“We should be at full strength for this game and I ask the community to come out and support the players.”

The other semi-final will see Hamilton Parish play Devonshire Cougars at Goose Gosling Field on Friday at 9pm.

Nigel Burgess, the Parish goalkeeper, admits his team will have their work cut against defending champions Cougars.

“We know it’s a difficult task; Devonshire Cougars are the defending champions and triple crown champions and they live for cup competitions,” he said. “We’re kind of new to this tournament but we’re looking to go as far as we can and give Cougars a good push.”

In the First Division Shield semi-finals, BAA take on Somerset Bridge at Wellington Oval on Boxing Day at noon, while Boulevard meet Devonshire Colts at Goose Gosling Field on Friday at 7pm.

The Player Development League Tournament semi-finals will be played next Monday at Goose Gosling Field.

The winner of Saturday’s quarter-final between PHC and Southampton Rangers will face BAA or Wolves, while the winner of X-Roads/Somerset Trojans will play Cougars or Dandy Town.
