BFA sets date for Smith hearing

Detroy Smith, having already been banned for ten matches by his club for spitting on referee Anthony Francis, will now have his day in the court of the Bermuda Football Association, with the disciplinary hearing set for Thursday.

The St David’s midfielder, who could miss the rest of the season whatever happens at the BFA hearing, committed his act after Francis had sent him off late in the Friendship Trophy semi-final defeat by Somerset Trojans on Boxing Day.

The club had already gone on record to say that they were “embarrassed” by the events that unfolded at Wellington Oval and reacted in kind with a swift and heavy punishment.

Somerset went on to claim a tenth title in the competition and will meet familiar foes when the Premier Division resumes tonight at Somerset Cricket Club. The Trojans will be high in confidence when they face Hamilton Parish for the second time in four days after a resounding 4-1 win at the National Sports Centre on New Year’s Day.

On the opposite side, Parish must hope to rebound, especially if Nigel Burgess, their first-choice goalkeeper who was so sorely missed on Wednesday, is back in the squad.

When the teams met in the league opener at Wellington Oval last September, it was Parish who recorded their biggest league win, hammering Somerset 5-1. Such a reversal proved par for the course for the Trojans, who were beaten 6-3 by Devonshire Cougars in the Charity Cup, then 4-1 by the same opposition in the Dudley Eve Trophy and 6-1 by Dandy Town in the same competition.

Since then, Somerset have been a team reborn and have climbed to second in the Premier Division, just a point behind Town, the leaders.

Cougars, the defending champions, host fifth-placed Flanagan’s Onions tomorrow at the Den looking to rebound from their own Friendship Trophy disappointment. Town are away to North Village at Bernard Park.

The battle against relegation involves the bottom five teams where only three points separate Southampton Rangers and Parish from St David’s, who prop up the table. PHC, who just won the PDL Festive Tournament, host Wolves at Southampton Oval, while St David’s will look to make home field count against Rangers.

Two First Division matches will take place tonight, with Somerset Eagles playing fourth-placed St George’s at Somerset Cricket Club and Robin Hood, the leaders, hosting bottom team Paget at Goose Gosling Field. Devonshire Colts, who are second, hope to maintain their promotion push with victory over BAA Wanderers at Police Field. In the other matches, X-Roads play Boulevard at Garrison Field and Young Men’s Social Club host Ireland Rangers at Bernard Park.
