Stars set for cash windfall

Wells shows his predatory skills with a late winner on debut for Huddersfield

Western Stars Sports Club stand to profit handsomely from the sale of Nahki Wells in the January transfer window.

As part of an agreement between Wells and Bradford City, Western Stars, under whose auspices Wells’s former local football team Dandy Town fall, will pocket £50,000 (about $80.000) in Fifa training compensation.

Wells, 23, moved from Bradford to Huddersfield Town in a 4½-year deal reported to be more than £1.3 million. It is a record sum that makes the pacy striker Bermuda’s first million-pound footballer.

“Dandy Town got £50,000, which I am very happy to have played a part in because they played a massive part in my development,” Wells told The Royal Gazette on Saturday once he had calmed down from the euphoria of scoring the winning goal on debut.

“Everyone knows what Dandy Town has down for me and it would be nice to see them use the money to help the youth programme or help develop the club and move forward.”

Wayne Campbell, the president of Western Stars, said: “It is my understanding that we are to collect a training compensation fee.

“We do not know all of the particulars at the moment or had time to sit down and discuss the matter as an executive. But once we get all the particulars, we will have a better understanding.”

In the summer of 2011, Town selflessly waived a $12,000 compensation package so as not to jeopardise Wells’s move to Bradford.

It is understood that the then cash-strapped West Yorkshire club were considering pulling the plug on the deal had Hornets not willingly forfeited their entitled development fee.

“I applaud Nahki,” Campbell said of the rising star’s determination to give back. “I have watched him from a youth and he has played with my children. I give him all the accolades. The guy is doing what he loves and is getting what he deserves for what he loves to do.

“He is following his dream and the club is behind him 100 per cent. He is doing great things and we are all here for him and his family.”
