Coach Fox says St George’s must find another gear

Injured: Mackie Crane

Kameron Fox, the St George’s coach, believes there is plenty more to come from his players as they prepare to face X-Roads in tomorrow’s FA Cup first round replay at Devonshire Recreation Club.

The two teams drew 1-1 in Sunday’s tie at Garrison Field and Fox is looking for an improved performance from his side who are yet to fire on all cylinders this season, despite sitting third in the First Division.

Fox is braced for another close encounter against promotion rivals X-Roads, but is confident his team can advance to the next round should they play anywhere near to their full potential.

“X-Roads are always a very hard team to beat and have some good players,” Fox said.

“I’m confident that we can do it and believe in my players’ ability, so hopefully we can win on the day.

“We still haven’t reached anywhere near our full potential. We’re hovering there or thereabouts [in the league table] by just getting points when we can. I don’t feel we’ve really put forward our best efforts, so a good win and a cup run could motivate us to do better in the league.

“There should be a lot more to come from our players. They have put in a lot of work and it’s just a case of getting us to gel together.”

St George’s will be without forwards Mackie Crane, who has a knee injury, and Jarazinho Bassett, who was sent off against X-Roads last weekend, making their Cup mission all the more difficult.

In their absence, Fox has thrown down the gauntlet to his fringe players, challenging them to step up and make a name for themselves. “We’re missing two players but it gives the other guys behind them a chance to prove themselves and show their worth,” Fox added.

“I just hope my team comes to show what they have got because it’s time they put themselves on the stage. We can’t continue to play like a First Division side if we’re looking to get promoted.”

Fox admits he has endured a mixed first season as St George’s coach but hopes to finish the campaign on a high with promotion from the second tier and a deep run in the FA Cup.

“My team doesn’t tend to take their chances during the start of games and that’s been keeping our opponents in matches,” he added.

“It depends on who turns up on the day. It’s an amateur league, so one day the players are hitting and the next day they’re missing.

“It’s my first season as coach and it’s a new team in many ways, so it could be worse but I also feel that it could have been a lot better. I’m appreciative of the players’ efforts, though, and hopefully we can kick on for the rest of the season.”

St George’s take on X-Roads at 8pm tomorrow.
