Comfortable wins for top teams

Corona League leaders Tuff Dogs and title contenders Robin Hood and North Village kept their double hopes alive with victories in the Bistro Challenge Cup quarter-finals.

West End United also claimed a win at Goose Gosling Field to book their place in the last four at the weekend.

Village enjoyed a heavy 7-1 victory over Flanagan’s Onions 12-0 while Hood massacred Valley FC on Friday night.

Defending champions Dogs defeated BAA Wanderes 4-0, while West End United beat Lobster Pot 4-1.

A hat-trick by Aljame Zuill along with braces from Ralph Bean Jr and Matthew Madeiros helped Village to their comfortable win.

Gordon Cox, the Flanagan’s Onions coach, described Villages’ finishing as clinical.

“Everything hit the side netting, clinical to say the very least,” Cox said. “If you have a bus that I can park in front of the goal for the next game we play against them, it would be greatly appreciated.”

Matthew Carvahlo scored a hat-trick for West End United who were also helped by an own goal. Ryan Minors scored for Pot.

Derek Stapely, the Hood coach, did not read too much into his side’s 12-0 thrashing of Valley FC, who had to play with just ten men due to lack of numbers.

Rohan Simons scored a hat-trick while Jamie Smith and Adam Petty both grabbed braces for Hood.

James Burton, Steven Simons, Aaron Eversley, Jahsha Scott and Fabio Duvuolo also scored in the lopsided win.

Although delighted with the result, Stapely admitted Hood’s opponents had not been at full strength.

“Valley weren’t at full strength and played with only ten players for most of the game,” Stapely said. “We scored early on and kept scoring throughout the match, and pretty much dominated proceedings for 90 minutes.”

Goals from Kevin Hurdle, Lamaul Crofton, Jamal Lovell and Justin Robinson helped Dogs to their win over BAA.

Dogs and Hood will renew their rivalry in the semi-finals, while Village take on United.

Both games will be played on February 28 at Goose Gosling Field.
