Wells on target in Huddersfield win
Nahki Wells scored his seventh goal for Huddersfield Town to help the Sky Bet Championship side to a 2-1 victory at Yeovil Town yesterday.
The victory brought an end to Town’s ten-game winless streak and preserved their Championship status for next season.
Wells, who signed for Town for a club-record transfer fee in January, struck in the 69th minute with a close range finish for his 22nd goal in all competitions this term.
Mark Robins, the Huddersfield manager, admitted he was relieved that his team had finally won a game again.
“That was tough to watch, the Championship can do all sorts to you,” Robins said.
“We have good players, but we looked less that competent in the first half; we kept giving the ball away and couldn’t build. We knew that if we could pass the ball we would cause Yeovil major problems, but it just didn’t happen. “I was pleased when half-time came. I think you could see the anxiety. At times our players seem to lack a bit of self-belief in their own ability and that has to be raised.
“There is work we can do towards that, but ultimately it must come from within.”
Town led when Wells slid in at the far post after a driving run by Adam Hammill, the Huddersfield winger.
But the visiting side’s lead lasted less than four minutes as Tom Lawrence equalised for Yeovil with a thunderous low free kick.
Adam Clayton, the Huddersfield midfielder, rifled in the winner in injury time to leave Yeovil six points adrift with two games left.
Yeovil now require an improbable set of results and a considerable swing in goal difference to maintain their second-tier statu.
“Adam [Clayton] is one player who doesn’t lack any self-belief; you can see that from the thing on his face,” Robins added. “I think he used the stick he got from the home fans today as a stick to beat them with, because he went onto smash one in the top corner.
“We should have put the game to bed earlier than we did, because we had some great chances; Jonathan Hogg missed a couple for us in good positions. We have Nahki to thank for scoring another goal; he’s been outstanding and will continue to be.
“I’m grateful, because we desperately needed the three points today. I’m relieved it hasn’t gone to the final game of the season like last year.
“It was massive because we haven’t won since 1 March; it’s been too long in coming. It’s still disappointing that we are talking about securing Championship status because we shouldn’t be. This has to be a lesson; we’ve had two seasons in the Championship now.”
One note of bad news for Town is the injury to Danny Ward, the Huddersfield winger, who was stricken on the pitch for some time due to a head injury.
“We’ll wait and see if it’s knocked any sense into him! He got a bang on his head, but he was talking when the physio went onto see him and he’s absolutely fine now,” Robins said.
