Smith hits hat-trick for undefeated Kings

Hat-trick: Smith

Jonté Smith bagged a superb hat-trick yesterday as Palloseura Kemi Kings enjoyed a thumping 4-0 win at home to Gamlakarleby Bollklubb, the bottom side in the Kakkonen North division in Finland.

The Bermuda striker led the line admirably, converting in the 41st, 52nd and 66th minutes to savour a maiden treble in competitive football since his arrival in Scandinavia in March.

Felix Gustavsson extended the home side’s lead in the 81st minute to further compound GBK’s woes.

Smith broke the deadlock with a header at the back post from a corner to earn Kemi Kings a 1-0 advantage at half-time. He then doubled his tally and team’s lead after the break after firing home from close range before going on to complete a special day with another effort from close range.

“I am excited to have got my first hat-trick for Kemi Kings,” Smith said afterwards. “Hopefully there are more to come.”

With better finishing, the Kings’ margin of victory might have been wider.

“In the first half, we missed a few chances and could have put the game to bed,” Smith said. “We took our chances very well in the second half, even though the other team had a bit more possession than us.”

The emphatic win extended the Kings’ unbeaten streak and, after 270 minutes of football, the division have yet to concede.

The Kings top the standings with a superior goal difference over AC Kajaani.

“The whole team is extremely happy with the start to the season,” Smith said. “Our results are just pushing us to keep working harder in training to keep this good run going.”

Smith has hit the ground running at his new club, scoring in each of the Kings’ first three matches this season.

He tops the league scoring charts with six goals, three more than Johannes Herala, of Tornion Pallo, in the race for the golden boot.

The former Crawley Town player made the best possible start to his career in Finland, scoring on his league debut in a 2-0 home victory over PK-37.

He then went one better by netting twice in a 3-0 win away to Oulun Luistinesura.

Smith joined the Kings on loan from Crawley Town, the Sky Bet League One side, until the end of the English season when his present deal with the Kings will be activated.
