Smith and Kings step up bid for promotion
Jonté Smith and his Kemi Kings team-mates will be looking to make further inroads towards clinching promotion from the Kakkonen North League when they host fourth-placed OPS on Sunday.
With four rounds remaining in the regular season, Kings have a three-point lead at the top of the table over second-placed YPA, who tackle third-placed Kajaani in their next encounter.
But Smith and his team-mates are facing a tricky contest against an OPS side who have already had the better of Kings on two previous occasions this term.
And with so much at stake, Smith knows the importance of Sunday’s match.
“There’s no room for underestimating our opponents this weekend because they’ve beaten us twice this season already,” said Smith, who initially joined the Kings on loan from Crawley Town, of Sky Bet League One, before signing a deal that will keep him in Finland until the end of the season.
“We’ve been top of the table all year and there’s very little to no room to slip up at this stage of the season.
“Every match at this stage of the season is important, especially being only three points ahead at the top.”
OPS beat Kings 1-0 in May and then repeated the dose courtesy of a 2-0 defeat in July.
It is a trend that Smith hopes comes to an end when the two rivals lock horns on the weekend.
“We’re playing at home against them this time and looking for a bit of revenge,” he said.
Kings, who play in the third tier of Finnish football, kept their promotion bid on track courtesy of an emphatic 6-0 demolition of lowly JBK in their previous outing, with Bermuda striker Smith scoring the opening goal.
Smith and his team-mates can secure a place in the promotion play-offs by taking nine points from a possible 12 from their remaining regular-season fixtures.
Smith, 20, is the league’s top scorer with 19 goals, which includes three hat-tricks.
