Flanagan’s Onions continued their good run of form with a convincing victory over St George’s in the Premier Division at Goose Gosling Field on Saturday night.

After making a slow start to the season, Onions have shown signs of recovery in recent weeks with a victory over then leaders PHC Zebras and a draw against Robin Hood.

Against St George’s, Onions were well worth their win, taking the lead through Keston Lewis, their talismanic striker, after he latched on to a through ball and placed the ball past Charles Marshall Jr, the St George’s goalkeeper, with the outside of his boot on the half-hour mark.

Lewis was then presented with an opportunity to score his second after good work down the right flank from Vincent Minors Jr, his workaholic strike partner, but the former PHC man headed over the crossbar from close range.

St George’s were offering little in the way of attacking threat and fell further in arrears when Tre Govia put the ball into his own net after a mix up with Marshall, who only partially saved a weak effort from Minors from close range on 62 minutes.

Onions looked to be cruising to their second league win of the season but were given a scare when Gould was adjudged to have pulled down Jarazinho Bassett, the St George’s striker, in the box.The Onions players’ protests fell on deaf ears with Lyndon Raynor, the referee, pointing to the spot, but Gould preserved his side’s two-goal cushion, saving the ensuing penalty kick, a poorly-taken kick from Mackie Crane.

St George’s poured men forward late on with Bassett forcing another save from the impressive Gould before the final whistle, signalling another step in the right direction for Onions.

Mick Ward, the Onions coach, said that he believed his side were good value for their victory.

“The last few games we’ve conceded early so it was important today that we didn’t,” Ward said. “Once we got the goal we were pretty comfortable. Late on they pushed men forward but I thought we dealt with them defensively very well.” Ward added: “We never actually played that badly at the beginning of season but we just weren’t getting the results.

“Thankfully the results are now coming for us and long may it continue.”
