Trott doubtful for PHC clash

Walking wounded: Trott leaves the pitch after suffering a nasty cut during Trojans’ 3-0 FA Cup demolition of Boulevard at the weekend

Alton Trott, the Somerset Trojans midfielder, remains doubtful for his team’s Premier Division clash with PHC Zebras at Somerset Cricket Club tonight.

Trott suffered a nasty cut above his left eye in an aerial duel with Nico Smith, the Boulevard forward, during last Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final clash at Somerset, which Trojans won 3-0.

It is highly unlikely the holding midfielder will be involved in tonight’s match, potentially forcing Trojans’ coaching staff to shuffle their line-up.

“I don’t think he will play,” Dennis Brown, the Somerset technical director, said.

Trojans top the Premier standings by a point over second placed Hamilton Parish and can extend their lead with victory over old rivals PHC.

However, with only five-points separating third-placed PHC from Trojans, there is also much at stake for the visitors who can ill afford any further slip ups if they are to savour a tenth overall league title — and first since 2007-08.

Zebras were bundled out of the FA Cup after losing 2-0 to Flanagan’s Onions in a heated battle at Goose Gosling Field last Sunday.

Referee Martin Wyer is alleged to have been verbally and racially abused during the bad-tempered match.

The Englishman booked five players and sent off Robert Bean, the PHC assistant coach, who launched a prolonged outburst at the referee from the bench, although there was no inference that his invective was of a racial nature. The club later condemned the abuse and vowed to impose sanctions on any supporter found guilty of committing the “outrageous act”.

Elsewhere tonight, hosts Devonshire Cougars and Robin Hood will be looking to climb further away from the relegation zone when they lock horns at Devonshire Recreation Club.

Only three-points separate sixth-placed Cougars from ninth-placed Robin Hood.

Both teams have struggled with form lately and must quickly find a way to stop the rot if they are to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle heading into the business end of the season.

Robin Hood suffered a humbling 4-0 defeat against Dandy Town Hornets in a lopsided FA Cup quarter-final clash at Goose Gosling Field last weekend.

The match was a repeat of this season’s Friendship Trophy final Town won, but they were later stripped of their crown for fielding an ineligible player.

Tonight’s Premier clash at Devonshire Recreation Club will be preceded by the First Division match between fifth-placed Wolves and eighth-placed Young Men’s Social Club, this season’s Shield runners-up.
