Representing your country is a privilege Jahnazae Swan, the Dandy Town forward, doesn’t take for granted.

The 17-year old Berkeley School student has been included in Bermuda’s squad for back-to-back international friendlies against Grenada, tonight and on Sunday, and is anxious to make his senior national team debut.

“This is a very good opportunity and a good experience,” Swan said. “I don’t feel nervous or anything like that and hopefully I get on the pitch because it feels good to play for my country and it’s also an honour.

“It’s an honour to play for my country because not too many people play for their country. Some people don’t want to play for Bermuda and say Bermuda does nothing for me. But my question is what are you doing for Bermuda?”

Swan is just one of many youngsters included in Bermuda’s squad for the upcoming World Cup warm-up matches against Grenada.

Andrew Bascome, the Bermuda coach, rates Swan as one of Bermuda’s most promising footballers.

“Jahnazae is a good player,” Bascome said. “He is very talented, hard working, has a good touch and also has good qualities.”

Swan has held his own playing domestic senior football with his club alongside Berkeley schoolmate, Jahtino Richardson-Martin, who has been invited to train with the senior national squad but will take no part in Bermuda’s international friendly matches against Grenada.

“Jahtino has been invited to train but it’s not in an official capacity because the squad has already been picked,” Bascome said.

Even though he will not be involved in the Grenada matches, Richardson-Martin is thrilled to have been invited to train at that level.

“I got called to train tonight [last night] and I am very excited because it’s an honour playing for your country,” he said.

Representing Bermuda on the international stage is something Richardson-Martin has long aspired to.

“I have always looked forward to representing Bermuda at the national senior level,” he said. “It’s an honour to represent your country and not too many people get to play for Bermuda.”

The 17-year old attacking midfielder has come on in leaps and bounds on the domestic front this term, banging in seven goals, including a hat trick against St George’s Colts, his first at senior level.

So what has been the key to the promising player’s success?

“I have trained very hard “I have trained very hard and put in the work and it pays off on the field,” Richardson- Martin said.
