Bermuda will entertain, says Leverock
Dante Leverock, the Bermuda defender, said the national team were determined to put on a show for their supporters during tomorrow’s World Cup qualifier against Bahamas.
A sell-out crowd is expected at the National Stadium, with Bermuda having a huge advantage going into the tie after thrashing Bahamas 5-0 in the first leg in Nassau on Wednesday.
Leverock, who impressed at the heart of the defence, insisted that entertaining the home crowd was high on the team’s agenda.
“We are pleased with the win in Bahamas,” he said. “Five-nil was a flattering scoreline for them, we should have had more, but we still have another game to go.
“We want to please the home crowd and play some attractive football. The coach [Andrew Bascome] said from the start that we want to get the fans out and give them reasons to come and support us.
“It’s an amazing feeling to have the support from Bermuda. I have never played in front of such a big crowd and it should be a good day for us.”
Leverock, who is based in the UK, believes Bermuda’s display in Nassau was far from perfect and that there was plenty of room for improvement.
“We are focused on getting some of the things right that we didn’t in the first game,” said Leverock, who scored the opening goal in Nassau.
“We weren’t perfect, even defensively despite keeping a clean sheet. We were a bit disorganised as well and the coach wants us to correct that.”
With the tie all but over and Bahamas having nothing lose, Leverock said Bermuda were expecting their opponents to attack from the outset.
“We don’t want to give Bahamas any kind of chance and we want to control things from beginning to end. We don’t want to concede and we want another clean sheet.
“We know they are going to attack us and will probably play two up top rather than one.
“They will try and unsettle us but we will stay compact and keep the ball.
“We’ll look to wear them out and play some free-flowing football, and let Nahki [Wells], Reggie [Lambe] and Zeiko [Lewis] do their thing.”
Tomorrow’s game kicks off at 3pm. Parking at the National Sports Centre has sold out, but there will be additional parking at The Arboretum from 12pm.
No tickets will be sold at the gate.
