Wells and Huddersfield sit pretty

Wells and Huddersfield take on promotion chasers Derby this weekend

Nahki Wells and Huddersfield Town secured their Sky Bet Championship safety after a scoreless draw away to Brighton and Hove Albion at the American Express Community Stadium on Tuesday.

The home side enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and hit the woodwork twice but narrowly survived after Wells squandered two late chances to earn Huddersfield the victory.

A clever reverse pass into the area found Wells whose first-time effort was easily saved by the goalkeeper. The striker was denied again after his effort from close range struck the upright with the goal at his mercy.

The point mathematically guarantees another season of Championship football for Huddersfield.

“We’re delighted that mathematically we are safe,” Wells told The Royal Gazette. “We knew all along that we would be, but it wasn’t about depending on others, it was about taking it into our own hands and picking up as many points as we can from now until end of season.”

Town are sixteenth in the Championship while their opponents on Saturday, Derby County, remain in contention for the play-offs in fifth.

“We are in a good space so we want to still pick up as many points out of the three remaining games as possible,” Wells added.

“We are unbeaten in four games and we just want to try and finish seven unbeaten as we look to end the season on as good form as possible.”

Turning his attention back home, Wells hailed former club Dandy Town’s FA Cup final win over Flanagan’s Onions.

“It was nice to see Dandy Town win the FA Cup,” he said. “Obviously they narrowly missed out on the league, but the FA Cup is still a big achievement to add to the many trophies they have won in recent years.

“Credit to the club, players, staff and fans — I’m sure they had a great time celebrating adding another cup to the trophy cabinet.”
