If anyone was in any doubt as to what happens when an individual other than José Mourinho becomes the story at Chelsea, the demotion of his physio Eva Carneiro should erase all doubts.

To the casual onlooker all Carneiro did was rush on to the pitch to treat the team's star man, who had taken a knock. A double fracture of the femur or a broken toe nail, the nature of Eden Hazard's injury was irrelevant — Carneiro was just doing her job.

Admittedly she then did herself no favours by heading to social media and, who knows, maybe Carneiro is an almighty pain in the rear end to work with day in, day out. All reports, though, suggest that is not the case.

No, it simply appears she had the temerity to mess with José's efforts to camouflage an underwhelming start to the season and in doing so undermine an ego as big as his trophy cabinet.

Mourinho is an arch competitor but on this occasion it appears he has picked up his ball and gone home. Classy.

As Blackburn fans will know, Rudy Gestede is a bit of a beast and he could start against United, who were fortunate to claim three points against Tottenham.

Villa should provide a test but with the new signings having got through their debuts, expect United to get on the front foot more often.

Southampton v Everton

Southampton looked dangerous against Newcastle last weekend — they could and should have collected all three points — and look perfectly poised to prove last season was no fluke. Graziano Pellè remains a Fantasy Football favourite.

This is a critical season for Roberto Martínez at Everton and, once again, they looked shaky in scrambling a draw at home to Watford. Home win.

Prediction: 2-0

Sunderland v Norwich City

Dick Advocaat will have tore into his players after being “scared” by the performance last time out. Expect a response. On the plus side, Jermain Defoe looked sharp.

The Canaries got a rude introduction to top-flight life against Palace but were no means overawed.

Prediction: 2-1

Swansea City v Newcastle United

The biggest shame of Week 1 was that Swansea's excellent display at Chelsea was largely overlooked. They were excellent and had real pace — Jefferson Montero skinned Branislav Ivanovic. It suggests they will be too slick and industrious for a Newcastle side still coming together under new manager Steve McClaren.

Prediction: 3-1

Tottenham Hotspur v Stoke City

Tottenham fans will hope they are sharper in the final third than they were at Old Trafford. Harry Kane, for example, looked like he was working his way through the gears.

Stoke welcome new signing Xherdan Shaqiri into the fold — how times change! The former Bayern Munich and Internazionale man has genuine stardust.

Prediction: 1-1

Watford v West Bromwich Albion

It is rare for a manager to admit culpability but Tony Pulis put his hands up for the defeat to Man City. Expect them to be a lot tighter in midfield and at the back.

Watford have speed in their ranks and are well capable of springing a surprise. Watch out for Troy Deeney.

Prediction: 2-2

West Ham United v Leicester City

Reece Oxford, just 16, is in line to keep his place for West Ham after an impressive debut against Arsenal. West Ham took everyone by surprise with their performance — although so did Leicester, who confounded the Claudio Ranieri naysayers with a 4-2 win over Sunderland. A five-goal thriller.

Crystal Palace v Arsenal

9.30am

Not an easy place for Arsène Wenger's side to go after the opening-day disaster. Palace look decent even at this early stage.

Alexis Sánchez is fit and his team-mates should be stung into action. Can there be a must-win game in Week 2?

Manchester City v Chelsea

12pm

The weekend's headliner. Arguably the best time for City to play Chelsea, who looked a little sluggish against Swansea.

However, Mourinho tends to have the wood over Manuel Pellegrini. An early pointer to the two team's title credentials.
