Last quarter-final spot at stake
Devonshire Cougars and St George’s will aim to clinch the last place in the FA Cup quarter-finals when they renew their rivalry at Devonshire Recreation Club.
The two clubs have been involved in some close matches over the years, including a FA Cup semi-final in 1995 at White Hill Field when a late, controversial goal by Cougars’ Wali Salaam denied the East Enders a first appearance in the final.
Salaam’s 84th-minute inswinging corner hit the back post before goalkeeper Troy Hall caught it as linesman Peter Sousa indicated the ball had crossed the line, a decision which sparked an angry reaction from the St George’s players.
Twenty one years on, the majority of the players involved are too young to know of the incident.
Cougars lost the final 2-0 to Vasco and were relegated from the First Division the same season. They lost again in the final in 2004 when Dandy Town beat them in a replay, but they have since gone on to win the competition three times, starting with their first win in 2010 over Somerset Eagles.
In the last six finals there have been only two winners, Cougars in 2010, 2011 and 2013, their “triple crown” winning season, and Town in 2012, 2014 and 2015.
This season Cougars, who are bottom of the table, are again battling against the threat of relegation, although victory over Southampton Rangers last week boosted their hopes of survival.
Kick off is at 8pm.
