Colts forced to look over their shoulders

Business as usual: Dandy Town were in no mood to do struggling Devonshire Colts any favours last night (File photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Devonshire Colts remained locked in a three-team relegation battle after losing 2-0 against newly crowned Premier Division champions Dandy Town at Devonshire Recreation Club last night.

Goals either side of the break from Angelo Simmons, the Town captain, and Tomiko Goater earned the visiting side maximum points and left Colts’ top-flight status hanging in the balance.

Colts are just four -points adrift of safety but have played one game more than ninth-placed Southampton Rangers.

Somerset Trojans, last season’s champions, also are not out of the woods just yet, as mathematically they, too, can be reeled in by Rangers, who also have a game in hand over Kieshon Smith’s team.

After watching his team slump to their seventh league loss of the season, Gerald Bean, the Colts coach, put his team’s predicament into perspective.

“It’s 50/50 now and if the guys put in the work, then we will stay up,” he said. “We have Boulevard in our last game and Rangers have to win both of their games or they don’t make it.

“But we have to do our part and we should have done it against Rangers Sunday gone. It is what it is now and so we will just have to battle in the last game.”

Rangers face relegated Hamilton Parish and PHC Zebras in their final two league matches at home while Trojans are at home to Robin Hood in their remaining fixture of the season.

Colts had plenty of good looks at goal against champions Town last night, but ultimately paid the price for squandering their chances.

Simmons gave Town the lead for good when he squeezed a low drive inside of Gregory Rose’s near post five minutes before half-time.

Goater then made the points safe when he chipped Rose from 30 yards after spotting the goalkeeper off his line.

Robin Hood 3

North Village 1

In last night’s other Premier Division encounter, Robin Hood beat North Village 3-1 at Goose Gosling Field.

Nathan Peskett led Hood’s charge with a brace while Lejaun Simmons added a third late in second half stoppage time.

Village, who had Rai Sampson sent off in the 87th minute after receiving a second booking for unsportsmanlike conduct, replied through Pierre Smith’s 75th-minute consolation.
