Odds against Rangers as relegation beckons
The remaining relegation spot will be decided on Sunday when three matches determine which team joins Hamilton Parish in the drop to the First Division.
Southampton Rangers, who are second from bottom, look the more likely to go down as they have the worst goal difference of the three teams, minus-18 compared with minus-10 for Devonshire Colts and minus-8 for Somerset Trojans, last season’s league champions.
Trojans, a point ahead of Colts and two more than Rangers, have their fate in their own hands, as do Colts, while Rangers have to beat PHC Zebras while hoping that Somerset lose or Colts get only a draw against Boulevard. Trojans started the year by winning the Friendship Trophy on New Year’s Day with victory over PHC at home.
However, the second half of the season has been up and down for the champions, winning only once and drawing five of their last eight matches. Another draw, however, will see them to safety as Rangers would have to score plenty against Zebras to climb above them on goal difference.
Trojans have been involved in two relegation battles in the last eight seasons, going down in 2008 and 2010 after getting promoted in 2009. Ironically, when Trojans went down in 2010, Colts, Rangers and Parish were also the bottom four teams.
Robin Hood, certain to finish runners-up for the first time, could have a say in the relegation fight. Last season they sent St George’s down after a win at Wellington Oval as Rangers escaped the drop for a second straight season.
Relegation was a long way from the minds of Colts during the first half of the campaign when they briefly led the table. Since January they have been on a slump, losing 8-3 to Dandy Town in January before heavy defeats to Parish, Somerset and Cougars.
This time last year Colts were battling with Boulevard for the First Division title, now they need a win against Blazers to be certain of staying up.
The six places for the Dudley Eve Trophy next season have been determined, leaving the next three teams to battle for survival. Boulevard and Cougars will finish mid-table, with both in a position to finish as high as third or fourth as only a point separates PHC, who are third, from Cougars in sixth.
Cougars close out their season against North Village at Bernard Park while top meets bottom at St John’s when Dandy Town will be presented with the league trophy after their match with Parish.
• Three players are battling for the golden boot award in the Premier Division. Lejuan Simmons of Robin Hood and Tomiko Goater of Dandy Town have 12 goals each, while Donovan Thompson of Hamilton Parish has 11.
PHC pair Cecoy Robinson and Casey Castle both have ten.
