Southampton Rangers and Butterfield & Vallis United will renew acquaintances in an FA Cup preliminary round replay at Goose Gosling Field tonight.

The initial match at Southampton Oval ended 1-1 after Davion Roberts had given Rangers the lead before Marco Mota equalised for B&V United with 15 minutes remaining to force the replay.

After managing a draw in the first match-up and with the comforts of playing at home, B&V United will feel that they stand a good chance of beating Rangers.

The Corona League side, who entered the FA Cup for the first time in the 2014-15 season, already have a reputation for upsetting the odds, after beating First Division sides BAA and Somerset Eagles at this stage the past two seasons of the competition. This fact will surely give them belief of a good result against Rangers.

Still, B&V United will have their reputation sternly tested when they take on Rangers, a side who are in good form as of late.

Rangers, whose pedigree in the FA Cup extends to victory in 1984 and, in more modern times, a 2011 runners-up finish to Devonshire Cougars, have recorded three wins and a draw from their five games in the league, and sit third place in the First Division.

Their only recent loss came in the preliminary round of the Shield against Hamilton Parish on Sunday, and they will be looking to avoid going out of another cup competition early.

Leroy Stevens, who replaced Armel Thomas as coach of B&V United this season, believes the result in the first match was a fair outcome, but said that his side were not able to match Rangers’ energy.

Stevens, a former Boulevard and Bermuda defender in his heyday, has already devised measures to allow B&V United United to get the upper hand on Rangers this time around. “We want to keep them out wide,” he said. “They are younger, and we don’t quite have the legs, so if we compact the field we stand a chance.”

In their first two seasons, despite winning at the first hurdle, B&V United have then gone out in the first round proper when the big boys enter the draw. This is something that Stevens wants to try to improve on. “We want to keep our record going of getting out of the first round,” he said. “I set a target of at least getting to the quarter-finals.”

Reaching the last eight would truly be a momentous achievement for the new B&V United coach, but before he can even dream of doing that, his side must first get past Rangers. Kick-off is at 9pm.
