Wagner wants Wells to stay put
Speculation that Nahki Wells could leave Huddersfield Town during the transfer window intensified yesterday after head coach David Wagner confirmed the striker had rejected a new contract.
Wagner revealed that Wells had turned down a new offer in the summer and said he has “no aim to sell” the player, who is said to be a potential £8 million target for fellow Sky Bet Championship sides Norwich City and Fulham when the window opens in January.
“January is approaching and we have talked about Nahki, just as we have in other transfer windows,” Wagner told the Huddersfield Examiner. “But for me, it is very easy to leave this talk behind.
“Nahki was offered a new contract in the summer and he turned it down. We left the discussions behind us.
“We wanted to focus on this season, and we can talk again about a contract when the time is right.
“No serious offer was received in the summer, if we get one in January, it will be considered.
“But why waste energy and time talking about something that hasn’t happened?
“Nahki is still our player, and I would like to keep him. I have no aim to sell.”
Wagner added that he had experienced no issues with Wells’s attitude this season.
“He is a very good footballer, a natural scorer, and an important player for us,” Wagner said.
“He suits our style and our style suits him, and I have no worries about his attitude amid this talk. Sometimes it is not easy to leave it totally behind when you are on the grass, because we are all human.
“But Nahki has a great approach to training and he is desperate to help the team and score goals.
“I don’t think Nahki’s attitude has changed over the past 12 months. Sometimes it is not easy to leave all the speculation behind you.”
Wells, 26, joined Huddersfield from neighbours Bradford City for a then club record £1.3 million in January 2014 and has 18 months remaining on his contract. He has scored 42 goals in 75 appearances for Huddersfield, including three this term.
Wells was previously rumoured to have attracted the interest of Championship side Aston Villa, whom he scored against in the 2012-13 Capital One Cup semi-final during Bradford City’s memorable run to the final where he became the first Bermudian to play at the new Wembley Stadium.
Wells, who was Town’s 18-goal leading scorer last season, is also the first Bermudian to score at the iconic Wembley having achieved the feat in Bradford’s 3-0 triumph over Northampton Town in the Sky Bet League Two play-off final during the same season.
Wells has been a regular in Wagner’s line-up, missing only the opening-day victory against Brentford and the EFL Cup defeat at Shrewsbury Town through injury.
Huddersfield are fourth in the table after an impressive start to the season and the potential sale of Wells would serve as a major blow to the club’s promotion bid.
The Yorkshire outfit are home to struggling Wigan Athletic on Monday.
The match will be shown on SportsMax, starting at 3.45pm Bermuda time.
