Burnley agree £5m transfer fee for Wells
Burnley have reportedly agreed to pay Premier League rivals Huddersfield Town a £5 million fee for Bermuda striker Nahki Wells.
The deal is expected to be completed by the end of today’s transfer window, according to several reports in the UK.
Burnley have been linked with the 27-year-old constantly over the summer and made a swoop for Wells after an offer for Abdul Majeed Waris, the Lorient and Ghana forward, fell through because of complications with the work-permit application.
Sean Dyche, the Burnley manager, sold striker Andre Gray to Watford for £18 million this summer and brought in Chris Wood, the New Zealand forward, from Leeds United, and Jonathan Walters, the Ireland striker, from Stoke City.
The Lancashire side view Wells as a like-for-like replacement for Gray, whereas Wood and Walters share similar qualities with Sam Vokes, Burnley’s Wales forward, who has been at Turf Moor since 2012.
Sky Bet has Wells at odds of 1-3 to join Burnley before today’s deadline and 9-4 to stay at Huddersfield, whom he joined from Bradford City in January 2014 and scored on his debut in a 1-0 victory over Millwall at the John Smith’s Stadium.
The former Dandy Town Hornets player has scored 49 goals in 153 appearances at Huddersfield.
Wells was a key part in Huddersfield’s promotion from the Sky Bet Championship last season, but has fallen down the pecking order at the West Yorkshire club after the arrival of record signing Steve Mounié, the Benin striker, from French side Montpellier, and Laurent Depoitre, the Belgium forward, from Porto.
Wells is in the last ten months of a 4½-year deal and rejected a new offer from Huddersfield last season. He recently had surgery for an ankle injury that has kept him sidelined since the preseason.
Wood came off the bench to score a dramatic late equaliser on his debut to help visiting Burnley rescue a point in a 1-1 draw away to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium at the weekend.
England midfielder Dele Alli put Spurs ahead early in the second half. However, Burnley, who are tenth in the Premier League, hit back through Wood’s clinical equaliser two minutes into added time.
Unbeaten Huddersfield drew 0-0 at home to Southampton on Saturday and sit third in the English top flight.
