Lambe puts Bermuda first
Reggie Lambe is confident Bermuda can come away with a victory against Barbados if they “stick to the game plan” in their international friendly at the National Stadium on Saturday.
Bermuda won 3-0 the last time the teams played here nearly a decade ago and Lambe, the captain, believes there is no reason why his team-mates cannot match that feat against the Barbadians.
Also included in the Bermuda squad is winger Zeiko Lewis, of United Soccer League side New York Red Bulls II, who is in line for his thirteenth cap.
“As long as we stick to our game, do what we have to do, focus in training and then apply it on Saturday, I think we have a better chance to get a victory,” Lambe told The Royal Gazette.
Bermuda and Barbados have each won two of the five previous meetings between the countries. And Lambe has urged the public to get behind Bermuda as they renew rivalries with their Caribbean opponents.
“They have been behind us before, so I don’t see why they can’t come out this time and continue their support, especially as we have a bit of momentum,” he said.
“This time I think it’s vital for us to put on a show and make sure people still want to come and support their national team.”
Lambe has put his club season on hold at Sky Bet League Two side Carlisle United and made himself available despite not being required to, as the match falls outside of the Fifa international window.
“Maurice [Lowe, the Bermuda Football Association development director] really did not want me to come back because it wasn’t an official window,” Lambe said. “I sort of forced the issue with him to bring me back, so I’m here and I will always play for my country as long as I’m fit.
“Anytime Bermuda have a game I always want to go back and play. It’s a motivation for me to come back and play for my country and an honour as well, especially if we’re playing at home. I like to be in front of my home country and playing a sport that I love.”
In an interview with the Gazette last month, Lowe said: “The match is not in a Fifa window or is an official competition, and so we feel it’s best to leave him to focus on his club career at this time.
“Reggie plays football for a living and while this is a friendly and we do take it seriously, we don’t want to interrupt his club season.”
Having made himself available, Lambe is once again looking forward to wearing the captain’s armband.
“It’s a big honour and very good to know that you have been chosen to lead your country out for any international game,” the winger said. “It actually means a lot to me and I’m very proud to be captain.”
Lambe is in the midst of a superb start to the season at Carlisle, having been inspired by Bermuda team-mate Nahki Wells, who is on the cusp of realising his dream of playing in the Premier League at Burnley.
“I have just been trying to get my head down and try to focus even harder than I did in recent seasons,” said Lambe, who has netted six goals already this term.
“Seeing Nahki in the Premier League has been a big motivation for me to push and get to the same level as him.”
Carlisle are sixteenth in the League Two, with five victories under their belt.
“I think last season we had more points and were higher, but we’re starting to find a bit of form and hopefully we can carry it on for the rest of the season.”
